Pio Cesare

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2016

Winery located in Alba, the Piedmont region was founded by its namesake in 1881. Great Grandson, Pio Boffa, continues the tradition of innovative wine making. Ruby with red fruit aromas and herb floral scents. On the palate sour cherry & dried berries, cinnamon, licorice and herb notes. Full soft tannins bring fruit to long finish ending with earthy mineral. Wonderful! Great now! — 6 days ago

Sadly, Mr. Boffa passed away in mid-April after a two week battle with Covid. He was 66 years old.
Everyone please have a toast and a prayer for him and his family.

Pio Decimo Rosso Nebbiolo

N: Bing Cherries, tar, mulberries, damson plum, gravel road.
P: Cherries, tar, bright acidity, gentle tannic grip, esp. in the cheeks. Mid-light weight in the mouth. I know with air/time, this broadens. As it airs, a mossy, leathery, quality comes forward esp. on the nose.
Really delicious.

Barolo Nebbiolo 2013

Very approachable even if only 8 years out. Nice mix of fruit and camphor. Great with a peppered filet. Solid Barolo and a good young one. — 16 hours ago

Barbera d'Alba 2018

For me: good….a touch imbalanced though. Fruit was a bit pushy and dirty/cloudy on the attack. The acid was a little to energize for the weight/mouthfeel. Yes, these are characteristics of the grape/region, perhaps it could have used a year or two of rest and found better balance… Or maybe I should have pair a better meal with it ;) — 8 days ago

Cortese di Gavi 2018

Pio Cesare Cortese di Gavi DOCG 2018: Sad to hear of the passing of legendary wine visionary Pio Boffa however last night I opened this bottle as a celebration of life! It was crisp & dry with bright acidity and great depth & flavor. Notes of citrus, green apple, pear & honey. Light minerality on the finish. Cheers & thank you to Pio 🍷🍷 — 2 months ago

Very very pretty nose. So elegant and airy. Layered. Unreal vivid cherries. Like in 3D. So beautiful. Unreal tar, flowers and roses. But there is general flower aroma and then awesome roses. Smokey and just SO perfumed. A nose to die for and it’s a 9.5 atoms out of the gates. Just insane. This is what one wants. Palate is round and so juicy. Wow. What fruit. Such an intense fruit squeeze and just amazing tannins. They are so so so elegant and ripe. They just perfectly integrate with all the other components. What a wine. Not a hair out of place. So so well made. I think Cesare is the Italian Zeireisen. He cannot miss. Best 2017 Barolo I’ve had and it’s not close. So haunting. This is like old school Volnay. What texture. So airy and rich but so fresh! This is the stuff. The sweetness starting to come in. This is so bright and vibrant. Wow. Stunning balance and purity. This will only gain with air.

It has gained. More inner mouth aromas, more purity, more length and now the mine skirt really has come out. Spectacular length. This is verging on a 9.6. So complex now. Just brilliant. The wine has an energy combined with a serenity that just slays you.

Ornato Barolo Nebbiolo 2006

Aromas of rose petals and menthol and a touch of tar. A very savoury medium weight palate with tannins fine and persistent - 90% resolved yet retaining classic mature Barolo structure. This wine could go on for a few years with little change I believe. Thoroughly enjoyable with Roast Pork for Sunday lunch. From family owned vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba. — 20 days ago

This is great stuff, enjoyed a '98 a couple years back, thought it was our last, then I found another one in the cellar last month!

Agreed Severn. I love mature Barolo but it probably needs to be at least 15 years old like this one and preferably 20 years. We visited Pio Cesare about 4 or 5 years ago. One of the few we visited that had their tasting facilities and cellars in the town of Alba and not out amongst the vineyards.

Sick. Super sick. Magic. The creme de la creme. This is a superstar wine. It’s so nice when elite expensive wine delivers. Nose has the most precise mid season cherries ever. So wow. Tar. Spice. Smoke. Layered like nothing else. Elite. A nose that captures you like nothing else. Licorice. So clean. Every aroma is so defined. So precise. But it also is ephemeral and flirty like great Nebbiolo should be. Seductive. Every sniff a new nuance. It smells crunchy. Ocean air leads to superb minerality. So so good. The clarity here is ridiculous. Just so insane. 9.8 nose. It might go higher. So elegant and concentrated with just the most precise fruit. Salty sweet almost. God damn this is so good. How to you get salty sweet cherries in a wine? And to have it taste this good. They are crunchy cherries as well. And like salt that you blend with caramel. That glistening salt. The clear stuff. Balanced. So so balanced and filled with energy and the most clear and precise fruit. Amazing tannins. Powerful but so deep and cuts a swath. Long like a July day. It never ends. And it coats your palate with minerals but the fruit keeps pushing for minutes. My score will be higher in 5-8 years.

Got insane overnight. Amazingly precise and smells elegant. Unreal sweet fruit. So pure. So complex. So powdery. Balance is superb. This is as good as Barolo gets. 9.7 to 9.8.
