Olga Raffault

Les Picasses Chinon Cabernet Franc 2014

Broke out one of my cellared Raffaults for my homeboy who graced me with a home cooked Tuscan styled flank steak w rosemary & arugula, as well as Israeli cous cous w chickpeas, charred tomatoes, feta, & herbs. Light Cadmium red hued & strong color though ( good cork- not a guarantee w Raffault!); dense Hibiscus, fresh raspberry & some bramble on nose; on palate very clean & smooth mouthfeel, with the initial flavors repeated but a deeper blend of red fruits & a stronger presence of under brush. Super fresh & integrated. Elegant, & the Burgundy echo was hard to ignore. Not Uber complex but not monolithic either, which this line of Raffault can be in its youth ( or as it ages). Very impressive, & accessible now. Curious how my ‘02 & 07s will fare… — 9 days ago

@Peter Sultan I am always surprised this is not on more restaurant wine-lists given the price to quality ratio.

I have no evidence other than anecdotal but I suspect bottle variability- both from my experience and from what wine stores have told me. I imagine too it’s a tricky wine to sell given it can really shut down for periods. But all guesses @Ira Schwartz …..

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

Strong, classic Graves Bordeaux. The cab franc was certainly present on the nose, perhaps because this was the sipping wine next to a 2009 Olga Raffault Chinon. Still good presence of darker fruits, with leather, earth and cedar. Nice mouthfeel. — 3 years ago

La Singulière d'Olga Raffault Chinon Cabernet Franc 2014

I’m a sucker for Raffault’s wines and this rarity is no exception. Made from a single old vine parcel in the Picasses vineyard, this wine is aged in 500 litre (1-5 year old) barrels instead of the large foudres used for Picasses.

Dynamite wine with more (but still restrained) oak use. Would love to get my hands on more of this and lay it down as it’s still super true to the house style. Wild and ageworthy!

Château Thivin

Côte de Brouilly Gamay 2019

I had with Passover meal. I have always found to be closed & more ‘ dumb’ in its infancy- almost like Olga Raffault chinon. Yet all the juicy & rewarding red fruit is there. Kermit importer. — 3 years ago

Domaine du Colombier (Jouvault)

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Chinon Cabernet Franc 2021

May not have the character of say a Baudry or Raffault Chinon, but still a profoundly true-to-terroir Chinon with all that fine grained dark berry earthiness, low on the funko-meter, & just plain ol’ low alcohol fun. Paired with brunch cheesy egg casserole of Gruyère, nutmeg, Parmesan etc that soaks overnight in Half & Half. — 3 months ago

Donna Olga Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2007

One of the more impressive Brunellos of this era I’ve had recently. Surprised. Fruit, tannins, and structure still going very strong with several years left at least. — 3 years ago
