Les Elotins Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2019

2019 vintage. The durty/lean side of Côte-Rôtie. Medium-bodied. Less fruit, more earth/dust. Tasted it 5 hours later after just sticking the cork back in at 3:15pm. Overt tannins had slightly backed off but extra/evolved fruit components hadn't rushed in to fill in the vacuum. Definite food wine. 10.8.25. — 12 days ago

LA VIALLIÈRE CÔTE ROTIE Syrah Viognier 2019

The debut vintage and a stunning debut. Bob Feller like. Incredible spice. Next level. Some wood but buttressed by amazing florals. Violets and roses galore. Wow. Granite and olive. 9.8 nose. Just blown away. Palate is so concentrated yet so silky. Sweet, rich and fresh with exquisite tannins. Dark berry fruit of the tiny kind. High high quality fruit here and absolutely a barn burner of a finish. This is very very good wine. — 3 years ago

Vielles Vignes Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2005

Good example of a Cote- Rotie a bit to the international style with a good bit of newer oak. The wine is unfiltered, which gives a good sense of earth to the wine. Well made, good earth, bramble and some mushroom on the palate. Served with roasted chicken, polenta and sautéed spinach. — 7 years ago

Côte Rozier Côte-Rotie Syrah 2020

2020 vintage. Popped and poured. Medium-heavy body. Rich, velveteen, smooth nose and proceedings with nary a speed bump. Some necessary dark cherry flavors initially to lend acidity since the back-end tannins are out to lunch. Correspondingly, no tannins and drinking pretty well currently. Can it get better? I could see it hitting a 9.5 in the next decade but that would be the ceiling. Prob settles in best at a 9.4. *edit* tasted 8 hours later after simply placing the cork back in the bottle and rating it a 9.4. Showing more depth/subtleties. Decant this bad bad boy or open well in advance. 10.8.25. — 12 days ago

Big wafting nose. Honeysuckle, guava, even some plantains. Mineral with some granite as well peeking through and way way floral. Almost a floral paste. Hint of wood. So killer. So pure. Sick classic Billon Condrieu nose. Palate is classic Billon and not gloppy and floppy but has energy and intensity while also showcasing the exotic side of Condrieu. Shows amazing persistence and great dramatic minerals on the finish. Excellent. — 7 years ago

La Bâtie Terres de Viennae Red Rhone Blend 2017

Really a beautiful and captivating Syrah apparently from right across from Cote-Rotie. Decanted 5+ hours and I recommend that at this stage. So much dark fruit - cherry, some plum - just delicious. Wonderful mouthfeel and a nice long finish with excellent acid. Has a certain seamlessness to it that makes it easy to keep drinking. Great with skirt steaks on the grill. — 4 years ago

La Brocarde Vielles Vignes Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2005

Very nice aromatics. Couldn't mistake it for anything but Northern Rhone. Approachable on opening and with the new oak had a very modern style at first. Decanted in a "duck" decanter, so lots of exposure to air. Evolved to a more pleasant / less modern style quickly even while retaining some of the new oak. Served in Rhone / Syrah glasses. Meaty but not too heavy, good palate of leather, earth, smoke, and some mushrooms. — 9 years ago
