The Relic Shiraz Blend

WEA tasting. 1% Viognier but I’m not intense enough to tell. Smells almost creamier/ more subtle, not crazy tannins. Mala pepper. Blackberries/ black fruit — a month ago

We had this with Oxtail dinner at Rattray’s in Mala Mala last night.

Not my usual detailed notes. This is ripe & lush like the Nederburg but with more complexity.

The palate showed ripe and slightly candied fruits of; dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries and a hint of blue fruits. Nice softly layered baking spices, dark chocolate, mocha, rich, dark soils, some dry top, well done granitic minerals and fresh red and dark florals. The acidity round & beautiful. The finish, ripe, lush, well balanced & polished. Good QPR here.

Photos of, today’s Mala Mala sunrise, baby calf elephant along with the nearly 40 in the herd and a total of over 100 Elephants seen today, playful male dominance of the Giraffe’s intertwining and smacking necks/mid section and the grand prize, male spotted Leopard. An amazing finish to our last day.

Chichateau

Fabula Mala Chardonnay 2011

Vinarija Chichateau, belo, Fabula mala a bela, chardonnay, 2019. Svetla, slamno-zlatna boja, na prvi miris blago cvetna aroma zatim jače limeta., kruška. Suvo vino sa blagim prijatnim kiselinama, umerene jačine, lep balans, lagano ka srednjem telu, voćni aftertaste u skladu sa primarnim aromama. Odličan chardonnay. — 3 months ago

Alto Estate

Superior Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Our last night in Mala Mala and Rattray’s. We loved everything about Mala Mala, Rattray accommodations, staff (especially, Reggie our Game Guide and Trevor who manages the restaurant & Bar), the 33,000 acres of wild bush and the all-stars, the wild life.

The 2014 Alto Cabernet is lush, silky and beautiful. So easy to drink, yet complex. The body full and the tannins round, soft and velvety. The fruits; ripe, dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, plum skin, dark cherries and strawberries comes on as it opens up after an hour in the decanter. Baking spices; clove, very light cinnamons, some vanilla, dark spice, medium intensity granitic minerals, beautiful spices, dark, rich soils, herbaceous notes, eucalyptus/mint, dry soils with dark fresh and withering florals. The acidity is round and beautiful. The structure, tension, length and balance are knitting together nicely. The finish is; ripe, lush, well balanced, polished and lingers for minutes. Another great QPR wine.

Photos of; our late Mala Mala sunset, the 80 herd Buffalo we met at twilight, male Lion and Lionesses in their 3 day mating ritual and our hillside coffee break watching the 40 Elephant herd we visited earlier.
