Four Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2017

“Four” is a single-vintage blend of the most exciting barrels of Chardonnay from Liquid Farm’s vineyards. Popped and poured; enjoyed with friends over the course of an hour or so. The 2017 pours a striking, intensely bright golden color. I’m not sure I have seen anything quite like it before. It’s nearly neon. On the nose, the wine is redolent ripe and tart tropical fruits: starfruit and pineapple along with lemons, green apple, butter, gentle baking spices (this does see extended time in a small percentage of new oak). On the palate, the wine is dry with what I perceive to be high acid. It’s awesome. Confirming the notes form the nose, the finish is long with good minerality. This is titillating wine that hooks you from sight to nose to palate and it’s the latter that drives it home with the remarkable acid to match the fruit. About as good as any New World Chardonnay I’ve ever had. Drink now through 2039. — 5 days ago

Thierry Allemand

Chaillot Cornas Syrah 2010

Sooo seems 2010 Northern Rhône is ready! After a stunning 2010 Jamet in recent weeks I was inspired to try ‘10 Allemand. A multi-hour decant has it simply rocking, wafting distinctive, captivating Allemand aromatics of deep dark fruit, olive tapenade, charcuterie, violets and a liquid rock minerality. It’s at the point where fresh primary fruit meets the cusp of secondary, tertiary character. The palate is silky, vibrant and mineral with its structured tannins beginning to soften. I wonder how 2010 Reynard would compare. But Chaillot, with air, is most certainly ready, but of course only entering its prime drinking window. Love these wines! — 2 months ago

Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Les Fuées Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2013

2013 at top level continues to drink fabulously, and Mugnier’s Fuées, a magical vineyard and essentially a southern extension of Bonnes Mares, is stunning today on pnp (although last sips were the best) wafting layers of sweet strawberry-rhubarb, sous bois, rose petals, game and smoky minerals. It’s liquid velvet in the mouth with an energetic spine of cool minerality and balanced acids adding freshness and focus to its delivery. It’s simply a beguiling combination of power and elegance and a superb expression of the vintage. — 4 days ago

SBC Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2022

Low 13%. They really try to find a balance. Not a burgh but really well made. Lots of fruit mostly blackberry driven. Hint cherry 🍒 and lime. Plenty of tannins. This should last 5 years or so. Has a little bit of a bite to it. Definitely one of the better Pinots out there for a good price (San Diego Wine Co.). — a month ago

San Diego Wine & Beer Co has the best prices in the county unless you can find things at Costco which doesn't have much of a selection.
