Nielson Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019

This is a new one to me… 2 hour decant left me happy as this wine has a smooth and silky texture with ripe cherry and Asian spice notes. — 15 days ago

Paso Robles Petite Sirah

Optio Vineyards San Luis Obispo Grenache 2020, California

Deep purple in color with a short purple rim.

Strong nose of blueberries, dried figs, raisins, oak, licorice, cooked cherries, vanilla, spices, espresso, cola, light tobacco and black pepper.

Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with stewed blueberries, cherries, oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, bitter herbs and peppercorn.

Nice length on the finish with round tannins.

This young Grenache is drinking very nicely already. Spicy and rich.

Nicely balanced with mild complexity. Showing a smooth mouthfeel.

Good right out of the bottle, and better with airtime. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

Easy drinking and good by itself. I paired it with a Charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

Grapes were aged in oak barrels for 17 months. A tiny production of only 3 barrels.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$58.

Out to the Meadow Chenin Blanc Blend 2020

I’m not a “natural wine” devotee necessarily, but I am a Martha devotee.

Out to The Meadow is almost always one of my favorites in her line up. Chenin driven, this wine shows the variety’s funkier side on the nose (honeysuckle, wet wool, hay, gray stones). On the palate, it balances sweet (honey, honeysuckle) and sour (incredible tart, barely ripe green apple, white nectarine); fruity, vegetal and just the right amount of bitter (at least for those of us with an bias towards Italian whites) with Vermentino’s unmistakable salty fennel/herbal/grapefruit pith on the finish. Have no idea what “green hungarian” and “chasselas doré” add to the blend, but I trust the master and her modern interpretation of what a century old California field blend would have looked and tasted like.

Wet wool? Living by the beach my wool suits get that funk, not sure I want that smell when I open a bottle 🤷🏼‍♂️🫣

Los Carneros Pinot Noir 1986

Found this bottle hiding on a shelf at The Artistry San Pedro. The owners were kind enough to allow me to open and decant it this evening.
Delightfully surprised that the porty nose blew off to reveal dried herby cran cherry rosemary notes with amarone style flavors and smoked oakiness on the palate.

Anniversary celebration in Jamaica. Does not get better than this as I’m with my soulmate ♥️

Day 2 and this picked up some urgency and a touch more character. Increased the score as a result.

@Ron R I think wine is a lot like marriage. A young wine, like a young marriage, can be exciting, bold, and full of energy. Over time it softens, the flavors meld together, and becomes something to behold. Congratulations! Cheers to many more years!

Sine Qua Non

Labels Syrah 2007

This syrah is simply excellent and I drank it at the right time. Not as viscous as I anticipated given the relatively high (15.3%) alcohol, but maybe the residual sugars have mellowed with age. It has some of the syrah “wildness” I like in my favorite K Syrah. Almost a raisin flavor, with some tannins. Too bad this isn’t every night. RP 98 pts, $299. — 16 days ago

Saracina

Lolonis Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Nose has under-ripe peach, lemon zest, cold chalk and wet beach sand.

Palate has pineapple core, dried lemon, sea spray and dehydrated peach.

Nice balanced acidity, no real herbal notes to speak of, a different expression than the traditional style. This wine should have a long life ahead, drink 2024-31.

The inaugural, single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc for Saracina from the Lolonis Vineyard; possibly some of the oldest SB vines in the US, planted in 1942.

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this afternoon with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our conductor Andris Nelsons and pianist Paul Lewis collaborate on the third of three concerts encompassing all five of Ludwig van Beethoven’s piano concertos in one weekend. Today's program includes OGONEK (Starling Variations, 2022; world premiere), FARRENC (Symphony No. 3 in G minor, Opus. 36) and BEETHOVEN (Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat, Opus 73, Emperor). This weekend has been an auditory pleasure, enjoying all five of Beethoven's piano concerti, and what a finale today!

@Douglas Braun @Andrew Schirmer Yes, a great weekend. But the most amazing footnote, Paul Lewis has played all 5 piano concertos this weekend without the benefit of sheet music, all memory! Plus I'm thinking might be the first soloist to perform with the BSO for 3 days continuously. We've not had a weekend of great music like this since we got all three acts of Wagner Die Walküre in one epic weekend several years back! (I had to take the next day off, we dedicated the weekend to a lot of Riesling.)
(I had to check my calendar to make sure which pieces were exhibited. 🤦‍♂️)
