Mambourg Alsace Grand Cru Gewürztraminer 2015

Pale yellow with nose of stone fruit and honey. Smooth on the way down with lychee honey on the palate. Not as intense as the zind humbrecht from the night before. Paired well with scallops and Dover sole. Another good Alsace product. — 12 days ago

— a month ago

Give this another decade to shed its primary, musque flavors. Elegant and tensely mineral Muscat with good potential — 4 days ago

Albert Boxler

Edelzwicker Reserve Alsace White Blend 2017

I love this Alsatian producer and am loving this Alsatian blend from Albert Boxler.

The term “Edelzwicker” in Alsace, France, historically -- dating back to the 17th Century -- indicated a wine made exclusively from a blend of the “noble” varieties, i.e., it had to be a blend involving Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris, and/or Gewurztraminer.

The term became deregulated in the late 20th Century, which explains how Albert Boxler now uses the name for a wine comprised of Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris, as a reminder Pinot Blanc is not a noble variety.

Perhaps this wine is both a nod to tradition and a commentary on how things can change. Perhaps this beautiful wine is a pure reflection of what tasted and blended best from the 2017 vintage, notwithstanding the noble (or lack of noble) status of the grapes involved, still deserving of the Edelzwicker designation due to style.

This wine is medium lemon. It has medium(+) intensity of youthful aromas, which include notes of ripe white peach, pear, apricot, cantaloupe, also white blossom, honeysuckle, and wet slate. On the palate this wine is dry. It has medium(+) acidity, a medium body, medium alcohol, and medium intensity of flavors consistent with the nose. The finish is medium.

Albert Boxler, Edelzwicker, Réserve, Vintage 2017, ABV 12.5%.

Hommage á Georgette Trimbach Alsace Pinot Gris 1996

Such a treat to enjoy this Pinot Gris at this age w/ my Spicy Asian Lettuce Wraps.

Nose shows; warmth, it’s inviting, heather honeyed, macerated yellow peach, apricots, overripe pineapple, lychees, marmalade jam, lime & lemon pulp, dry, sandy soils, some very, soft white spice, limestone powder, understated mix of dry & fresh herbs & withering; yellow & white lilies & spring flowers.

The body is rich, thick, waxy and lush. full honey notes, macerated yellow peach, apricots, overripe pineapple, lychees, marmalade jam, lime & lemon pulp, pink grapefruit, some blood orange, overripe melons, dry, sandy soils, chalk powder, sun tea, some very, delicate, white spice, slivered almonds w/ skin, limestone powder, hint of mint, saline hue, dry twig, understated mix of dry & fresh herbs & withering; yellow & white lilies & spring flowers. The acidity is round, excellent & beautiful. The finish is well balanced, smooth wrapped in smooth. elegance defined with bold fruits falling onto some of the softest, dry, elegant, beautiful minerality I’ve had. Her age & beauty are on full display. Nothing tired about this 96.

Cuvée Frédéric Emile Alsace Riesling 2010

Striking out recently. Lots of minerality, but nose is weak. No fruit or characteristic secondary aromas. A bit of confectionary quality, cotton candy and fondant, on day two but still subtle. Decent concentration, medium acid, and nice satiny texture.

Initially believed this was in a dumb phase, but picking up TCA on repeat tasting.

@romo this isn’t a style issue. @Tom Casagrande picking up some mild TCA on second tasting... I wouldn’t write this off.

Schlossberg Grand Cru Riesling 2015

Nice Riesling, nice full texture, rich but not too much, acidity is backward, residual sugar feel is low, a bit of evolution though for such a young Riesling. 89-90

Beau Riesling un brin évolué pour son âge, une belle texture pleine et assez riche, acidité en retrait, pas de sensation de sucre résiduel trop élevée, belle longueur, très bien et content de ne pas avoir trop attendu cette bouteille.

Alsace Grand Cru Frankstein Muscat 1994

Dried ginger, orange peel, lemon zest, gingerbread, honey. Medium acidity and still greatly drinkable. Nearly dry but not as crisp as rieslings from the region. — 6 days ago
