Gravner

Venezia Giulia Ribolla Gialla 2015

No formal notes. A burnt brassy colour. It’s difficult to imagine a white wine with more flavour intensity than this skin contact Orange wine from Gravner. From memory apricot and mandarin peel, walnuts. Great palate length, low acid. Went well with a rich fish dish where I would normally have a light Pinot Noir. — a month ago

Château d'Yquem

3 Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2014

From a half-bottle. This was the pièce de résistance to our evening (although someone apparently opened a Gravner that I somehow missed). Anyway, the thing about d’Yquem is that you don’t have to love Sauternes to fall head over heels for it. This was liquid stars. The sheer density is out of this world. Loaded with tropical fruits, exotic honey, stone fruits and minerals. Gorgeously textured and brilliant acidity to make it all work. A forever finish. I don't know how a wine like this could ever die. — 3 months ago

Gravner

Anfora Venezia Giulia Ribolla Gialla 2006

I guess this disproves the supposition that natural wines don’t age. This Gravner was from the 2006 vintage. No formal notes with the family home for Christmas. This had an oxidative note along with cumquat full bodied flavours. At this age, an acquired taste. As you can see the colour in the glass is a deep amber. A blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Italico, fermented separately and aged together. Fermented in Georgian qvevri buried underground with ambient yeast and no temperature control. Unfined and unfiltered. — 9 months ago

I had the 2004 BIANCO Breg couple years back and it was a huge disappointment. Glad to know you had a great experience @Bob McDonald ! I want to try it again.

Consistent disappointment with another bottle from last week. Looks good, smells good, but that’s where the fun ends. — a month ago

Arboreus Umbria IGT Trebbiano 2012

Popped and poured; no formal notes. This was poured alongside the 2013 Gravner Ribolla and they we remarkably similar. The Arboreus was more dried peach than apricot (Gravner). Super complex. Looking back on my previous notes, they still apply. That being said, drink now as I don’t have a good read on what happens next with this wine and it’s delivering the good so well right now. Wild stuff - gorgeous dark yellow w/golden highlights, big oxidative nose of dried apricots & white flowers, ripe citrus, some orange rind, really unusual & engaging. Silky luxurious textured on palate, plenty of acidic backbone here and more of that oxidative effect - Gravner-esque. Didn’t see this one coming - bravo! — 9 months ago

Poderi Di Carlo

Venezia Giulia Ribolla Gialla Orange

Hazy orange. Shy but inviting nose of citrus rind and baked quince. Full palate or orange rind, quince, cinnamon bark, and terra cotta. Light tannins. Medium acidity. Longish finish continues the palate. An excellent intro to the traditional NE Italian/Croatian orange style in the signature variety. Unfiltered and finished in a combination of barriques and amphorae, this "baby Gravner" is at home anywhere you'd take a midweight white or lighter red. Rich cream sauces are a particular match. Drink now through 2025. — 8 months ago
