E Series Chardonnay 2017

Choosing the next Downs Club White wine from 44 masked entries. Great balance between fruit and oak - the former in the peaches/stone fruit style. Very balanced. Amazing QPR selling for $15 on the Elderton web site with a LUC to the Club at under $10. My choice on the night but sadly democracy prevailed and another wine got the nod. — 5 years ago

Winemaker Select Shiraz

Very black wine. One of the darkest I've seen. Very complex wine. Dark black currant, blackberries, strawberries, cherries, very bold cocoa/chocolate. Smells extremely hot, spicy, red fruit. Medium long finish and medium plus acid. The longer it's in the glass, the more flavors that come out. Really blown away. — 7 years ago

Yalumba

The Octavius Barossa Old Vine Shiraz 2008

The first of 3 Yalumba Octavius Shiraz brought to the Cairns BYO Indian restaurant. No formal notes but you could use the notes for the just posted Elderton Command. The other 2 Octavius drunk on the night were 2015 and 2016 which were excellent but way too young. — 3 years ago

Barossa Shiraz 2010

At eight years of age this one is still incredibly youthful. Mostly dark primary fruit - juicy blackcurrant - with spicy tobacco notes. Drinking swimmingly right now. — 6 years ago

Command Single Vineyard Shiraz 2002

Others say it all in much more detail below—big stewed purple fruit, smoke, tar, pepper, tannins resolved, balanced, better acid than I was expecting, not totally my thing but impressive — 9 months ago

Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz 2016

Ripe fruits, creamy mouthfeel, full bodied with lovely acidity and rounded tannins. Not spicy for a Shiraz. — 5 years ago

Elderton

Barossa GSM Grenache Blend 2015

At the Elderton Tasting and Dinner at the Downs Club hosted by co-owner Cameron Ashmead. I preferred this GSM to the Entry Level Shiraz with its sweet plummy earthy fruit and supple tannins. A crowd favourite on the night. — 6 years ago
