Chateau Grand Donnezac

J. A. Balistreri Vineyards

American Carignan 2018

This is a nice red wine from Colorado. Showing red fruits with light wood, Mediterranean spices, peppercorn, cumin, herbs and earth.

Medium bodied with medium plus acidity.

Needs an hour to open up properly, so be patient. Showing a great nose, once it opens up.

Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years.

Tangy and spicy. A good quality wine and very interesting.

A good food wine that I paired with Brie cheese.

15% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$38.

Grand Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

A fine dry Cab. This has the aroma structure and rich smooth flavors. Enough Tannins to highlight the grape and barrel tastes. Very pleased to have this fine vintage from Colorado. — 12 days ago

Vaudésir Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2015

The aromatics are of lemon zest, some butter, a touch smokey and flinty and some ripe orchard fruit. Good acidity but dominated slightly by a certain richness and ripeness, a little more then usual and probably due to the warmer vintage. Nice, but not the better Droin bottle I had. 89-90

Stanton & Killeen

Grand Rutherglen Muscat

This Grand Muscat is a step up from the Classic 12 year old I tasted 95 weeks ago. Liquid raisins, milk chocolate and toffee with incredible intensity. These are great to sip after dinner in winter but not as appealing as the weather warms up unless served with a slight chill. I hope the coming Summer is not as destructive as last Summer. — 13 days ago

House of Arras

Grand Vintage Champagne Blend 2007

Comprehensive notes from 24 weeks ago still apply. Definitely Australia’s best sparkling I think, from Tasmania. Straw and hay aromas with fresh bread. With over 7 years on lees giving this quality and complexity if it was French you would be paying a couple of $100. Champion wine of the Brisbane Wine Show in 2016. — 3 days ago

Grand Rutherglen Topaque Tokay

See recent notes for the Stanton and Killeen Grand Muscat. This is the Topaque (cannot call it Tokay any more) made from the Muscadelle grape. Like the Grand Muscat the average blended age is 15 to 20 years. Very similar in flavour profile with the Muscat, the latter probably a bit sweeter with more molasses notes. This Topaque is a tiny bit more bitter with caramel, toffee and a lot of liquid raisin character. Thoroughly delicious. These old Rutherglen fortifieds are one of Australia’s gifts to the vinous world. — 10 days ago

Domaine Leflaive

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 2017

The second of the Whites at the Grand Cru Burgundy dinner. So opulent it could be new world. Very fresh and lively with Medium + acid to go with that lovely fruit. Ticks all the boxes. A very long life ahead. More intensity and more voluptuous than the Bienvenues although to be fair comparing different vintages. A tinge of pineapple juice at the finish. — 4 days ago

@Mario Vaillancourt It was a great bottle. Pity it was so expensive - it would be great to try in 10 to 15 years time.

Kaefferkopf

Grand Cru d'Alsace Riesling 2014

Hazy and almost color of wet hay, this did not present as a very attractive wine. But looks, as we all know, can often be deceiving. In fact, this was a gift for the senses! On the nose, I detected the presence of brettanomyces but it was kept well in check. The real story was the bruised apple, Bosc pear, lemon citrus, decaying flowers, wet stone, and spices. I didn’t want to stop smelling my glass! On the palate, slightly over ripened Pome fruits, lemons, earth and spices. Super dry. High acid. Long, long finish. What a wine! This was a killer pairing with scallops & white fish ceviche accompanied with roasted Brussels sprouts & crispy leeks. Drinking at or near peak but should last for years. — 7 days ago

Domaine Dujac

Echezeaux Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2017

The first of the reds at the Grand Cru Burgundy Dinner Heady aromas of plum and violets with a high percentage of whole bunch, around 85 to 100 percent apparently. - more fruit driven though, before the Sous Bois characters develop with a few more years. Ramon, the importer, said 12 bottles came into Australia and 4 bottles consumed at this dinner. Red fruits on the medium weight spicy palate - 70% new oak. Close to my WOTN. Interestingly Negociants the importer are also the sole importers of DRC into Australia and Ramon said they get much more DRC Echezeaux than Dujac Echezeaux. — 4 days ago

Delagrange-Bachelet

Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 1989

Tasted blind. Great nose but a tiny bit of taint. My first taste tells me this packs a big wallop. Huge fruit, acidity and structure. Lemon chiffon, white flowers, earth and rocks, some iodine. Motor oil weight. The taint was minor but just bothersome enough. Without it this would merit a bigger score. — 10 days ago
