Subtle and scotch-like in some respects, but nevertheless giving with strong scents of grape skin, wood spice, and white raisin. A bonkers proposition, not only was this Cognac aged in a handmade single cask by the Pelletans, the brandies that went into it are a blend of vintages ranging from 1925-1965 exclusively making this undoubtedly one of the rarest bottlings you could hope to get your hands on. Bottled at natural cask strength and with zero additives or artificial ingredients. Pencil lead and forest floor nose, I made the rookie mistake of decanting outside in Covid-friendly but 60f setting. Never completely warmed and opened up, but nonetheless gave up phenomenal purity of black fruit, smooth tannins and rich dark berry melted into the moderate wood frame. We cognac-held our glasses to warm things up, releasing superb layers of vanilla, brambly red fruit, waves of light cassis. Perfectly cellared bottle could easily cruise 5+ more years. Cognac but made against all traditional rules. Matured on whisky barrel, single cask, cask strength 51,9 %,28 years old. Yes, it tastes like a very good delicious XO cognac, but it has a bonus from the cask. Major extra points for that. Had beter cognac, but at triple the price. This is a wonderful white blend from California. A great collaboration between a French and a Californian wine makers.
Showing citrus, lemons, apples, pears, minerals, herbs, spices, light earth and white pepper.
Medium bodied with medium acidity. Crisp and refreshing.
Dry on the palate with some light RS.
Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Shows nice complexity already. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 years.
I paired it with a duck Pâté with cognac. Delicious.
A blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier and Picpoul Blanc.
