Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2015

Popped and poured; presented double-blind. The wine presents a pale straw color with a silver rim. Medium viscosity. No signs of particle or gas. On the nose, the wine expresses notes of pineapple, apricot, yellow flowers, and what I detected as ferrous minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry and elevated acidity; what I would place as medium+. Confirmed the pineapple and stone fruits which are accompanied by some lemon citrus and the aforementioned minerals. There’s a good core of fruit but the structure is hard to place in the New World so I’m in France, Burgundy, Chablis…from a quality producer…village level. Turns out…I was close. And I gotta be honest, I almost called 1er but I couldn’t easily pick out the oak treatment until I had an empty glass and there it was. Oh well…learning. Regardless, a lovely example from a warm vintage.

Saint-Pierre Chablis Chardonnay 2018

Lesser known Chablis bottling from the affordable (and over-performing) Dauvissat - entirely in steel so it’s just juice, lees, and terroir in the bottle. Read that - thugs is from 15- to 20-year-old vines planted in five different parcels: two next to premier cru Montmains, two near premier cru Montée de Tonnerre, and one in the commune of Préhy. — 3 years ago

Pale lemon color with aromas of citrus, stone fruits and herb spice notes, from south facing vineyard, 66% aged in the barrel. On the palate flavors of peach, Asian pear and lemon citrus with notes of white flowers and herb spice. Medium+ crisp finish, vivid acidity ending with citrus and bright mineral character. — 3 months ago

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2020

Fantastic Chablis, evolving nose that shifted from balanced white floral, to lemon peel, to slightly farmy/sulfur notes. Very soft and round mouth feel, present but not overpowering acidity, lasting finish that becomes more savory and rich as it develops. — 8 months ago

Vincent Dauvissat

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2020

The best vintage for Dauvissat since 2014 imo, 2020 MDT, the rarest parcel from the Domaine is impeccable in this vintage, floral, satiny and concentrated with layered richness and Chablisen minerality, it keeps gaining in weight in the decanter building throughout the night. It’s pure, textural and expansive and most of all complete even in its early stages. The best MDT Dauvissat has made thus far, just its 7th vintage for the vineyard. Yellow wax bottlings for whatever reason, even if the difference is merely filtration, always show better than foil. — a year ago

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2021 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru retains its serious and backward nose, very saline and still with that faint tang of kelp/Japanese nori. The palate is beautifully balanced with a keen thread of acidity, notes of orange rind and a more malic finish than I recall, yet with the same wondrous elegance and poise. This will age wonderfully in bottle and require time for the aromatics to awaken. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2023)

This Chablis paired perfectly with Mac & cheese made with sharp cheddar and Gruyère. The nose is so fragrant and the palette is crisp with notes of green apple. A great Chablis choice. — 5 years ago
