Anthology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

A beautiful wine from a producer that I’m quite fond of (more on that in a bit). This selection is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. The fruit is sourced from six appellations: Oakville, Rutherford, Atlas Peak, Diamond Mountain, Stags Leap District, and Chiles Valley. Coming from a vintage with “typical” Napa Valley weather conditions, this bottle is the perfect iteration of Anthology for me to try for the first time. Plush, cool, sweet black & blue fruits - plums, blackberries, boysenberries - laced in Christmas spices, coffee grounds, vanilla, and star anise. On the palate a lovely, velvety texture that accentuates the sensuous plumpness that stands out on the nose. A lovely wine ✨

A quick word on Conn Creek as a producer.

Many years ago when I first “getting into” wine I had a friend who introduced me to Conn Creek (both their Cab and their red blend). After that first exposure to their wine my wife & I began keeping their wines on hand at all times, as they were ideal selections to have around the home for all kinds of occasions. Alas, this is my first Anthology and what a delicious selection it is.

Neyers Ranch - Conn Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Gambled on this ‘04 back vintage and didn’t know what to expect. Was very pleasantly surprised at how well this has held up. Not mind blowing but surprising for the QPR with still some solid structure and tannins. Needed about 30 min of air to start to get there and a solid decant for sediment. — a month ago

Red Hills Lake County Rosé Blend 2019

Rose blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Cabernet Sauvignon. Salmon rose gold color, fruity & delicate aromas of fresh berries, melon, peach and also cotton candy. Nice lingering acidity and the finish tasted like a raspberry. — 2 months ago

Napa Valley Petit Verdot 2015

Dried flowers, cocoa, anise & black tea. A mediocre Petit Verdot but the palate was balanced & softer than I expected. — 11 days ago

Anthology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1998

Holding up well for 22 years old. Licorice, concentrated berry sauce, forest floor. Acidity is still very much there and quite soft tannins. — a month ago

Estate Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Nice bouquet, but not that distinctive on its own. However, it’s flavor soars when paired with a fatty meat. We paired it with roasted lamb and raspberry sauce, which balanced the tannins and brought out hints of cherry and blackberry. — 2 months ago

This is an old world wannabe that manages to be. Both direct and complex, it could be mistook for a Chateauneuf, Rhône, Margaux or Brunello. This wine is where all those flavors converge.

Reserve Series Mountains Proprietary Red Blend 2013

Shay A

Was a wine club member here for a few years and very much enjoyed the entire portfolio. Stunning winery up Conn Creek Rd just south east of Lake Hennessy. Wonderful people too.

I always found the mountain proprietary blend more accessible at a young age compared to their cab reserve. At 7ys young, and even for the big and structured vintage of 2013, this was very enjoyable close to pop and pour. Brilliant color of purple in the glass offering up aromatics of baked mixed berry pie, fresh potpourri, cedar, espresso, and baking spices like cinnamon and vanilla. While extracted and rich on the palate, it has plenty of tannin to keep things balanced. Red, blue and black fruits accompanied by sandalwood, grilled violets, decadent dark cocoa and dusty character toward the finish.
