Poured into a decanted about an hour prior to service and presented double-blind. The 2019 “Lily’s Garden” pours a deep garnet with a bit of purple and a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose the wine is developing with black bramble fruit, purple flowers, a touch of the animal and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The alcohol is elevated; calling it high. The finish is medium+. I called Syrah from France, from the Northern Rhône, Croze-Hermitage from a recent warmer vintage like 2019. Dangit…I got the variety right but I should have considered Australia with the elevated alcohol. This is a fairly classic Aussie Shiraz that certainly gives off a French vibe but the fruit and alcohol give it away. Drink now through 2034.

Deep Ruby with aromas of berry fruit and herb pepper spice with floral and earthy notes, sat on French oak for 18 mos (10% new). On the palate cherry and blueberry flavors, citrus, tea, herb spice, oak and earthy notes. Fine tannins, vivid acidity, good balance, well structured on long finish ending with earthy mineral tones. A powerhouse that will cellar well. Nice!

Big bold delicious with blackberry and blueberry. Minty notes, medicinal, with smoke/vanilla/toast, and some tertiary notes of leather and peppercorn. Tannins smooth, easy to drink...its very tasty, but just too much alcohol in the end..no doubt a long finish, but with that finish, I could blow fire...

Haven’t been down under for a while. This is really nice, tho. Nice nose of treacle toffee and coffee grinds. The palate displays a deep reduction, complimented by violets and balsamic notes. Picks up intensity and urgency. 12 years in - very cool.

After 17 years the oak has not integrated. Smells of wood and tastes of wood.

First, if you haven’t had this producers wines at 15-20 years of age, you’re missing some spectacular juice. I bought this at auction for $38-$40 a bottle and because I was unaware of its storage, I was prepared to short decant it. Well…until I pulled the cork, smelled it and saw the color. This nearly 20 year old bottling is still big but with nice integration & evolution. I would say it has another 5-8 years of good life in it.

The palate fruit is ruby, ripe and lush; blackberries, boysenberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, black plum. Mid berry cola, dark chocolate to pudding, mocha powder, wet clay, light, black pepper, Asian spice, dry-ish tobacco, black licorice, some dry herbs-sage dominate, limestone, dry top soil, dry brush, used leather, sandlewood, fresh to slightly withering, dark, purple, red florals set/framed in violets and lavender. The acidity is near perfect. The well balanced, structured, knitted finish is excellent and lingers minutes. Steal for the price. Another excellent gourmet burger wine. Beef Patties from El Salchichero.
