Wine of the night. Such awesome purity of fruit and the tannins are still very much present with a nice little lace of acidity. Great with a ribeye tonight. She’s a beaut.

Drank alongside an ‘01 To Kalon, the TK having marginally more pipe tobacco and compote dialed in. Superb, the TK a 95.

My friend graciously shared his 1979 Robert Mondavi Winery ‘Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon(WWB, 92), a wine I had not visited since I was at the winery several years back. The nose is highly Bordelaise with layers of red currents and red bell pepper with shades of dusty terroir that all mingle in the glass. The wine still has a good degree of freshness and a core of dark fruits with red bell pepper, damp earth and sandalwood tones. This now forty one year old wine has aged very gracefully. While not in its prime, it will provide drinking enjoyment over the next five to ten years — yet another resounding success from this Oakville estate. Drink 2020-2025- 92

Wanted to raise a glass to Kobe. 1978 was his birth year and the final year that had all the premier fruit! The following year all that amazing juice went to the first bottling of Opus One. This was very emotionally impactful for us. Amazing wine!

A few wines from last week’s 4th Friday event!
At 9/10yrs, this is starting to fire on all cylinders. Very dusty on the nose. Rich black cherries, clove, cardamom, and some leather too. It sports a soft yet powerful profile of fig, potpourri, graham cracker, dark cocoa and an integrated finish. Balanced at the moment, and may even improve over the next 2-3yrs. Thanks @Bill Makens .
