Monastero Trappiste Vittorchiano
Coenobium Lazio Bianco Trebbiano Blend
Terrific white blend with some skin contact… but not really an orange wine. Wide range of food pairing options.

Apr 8th, 2024Entry-level white wine from the good sisters of the Monastero Suori Cistercensi in Vitorchiano, under the tutelage of Paolo Bea. Blend of Trebbiano (45%), Malvasia (35%), and Verdicchio (20%) from organically-farmed vines rooted in volcanic soils. Fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and about 1 week of skin contact. Rich, ripe, complex nose, with aromas of pear skins, apricot, honey and notes of iron and herbs (fennel). Full-bodied, round, quite concentrated. Lovely chalky/mineral texture

Jan 2nd, 2023Golden, almost amber hues show prominently on this medium bodied beauty. Surprisingly though, this is a very shy wine. Despite it being a 2020 it took quite some time to open up and show its true colors. Tepid at first, this wine really evolved, opening up with a bold nose of cumquat and prominent citrus, with an undercurrent of lemon and lime florals, with a hint of salty wet sand towards the end. The palate has notes of pear, star fruit, and fresh but underripe peach, with a finish that’s somewhat vegetal and again, underripe. The finish is surprisingly lingering, with a spine of acidity that tinges the palate for a while after the first sip, with a delicate and fresh effervescence on the top of the tongue. It definitely grew on me, but it’s not overly memorable.
