The wine served tonight is the 2016 Meerlust Rubicon Cabernet Sauvignon Blend. This is from the Meerlust Estate Stellenbosch, South Africa. The blend is 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.

On the nose there is cherry, strawberry, plum, green bell pepper, herbal notes, vanilla, licorice, minerals and dark rich soil.

On the palate I am getting black cherry, blackberry, strawberry, black currant, licorice, green bell pepper, vanilla, some oak, minerality and soil.

The wine is full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel medium + acidity and medium + grippy mouthcoating tannins that leaves you with a ling black fruit mineral finish. Eventhough we are still in the in the midst of fall, there is a feel of winter crisp and clean on ones face. This weekend please stay safe and healthy and let us enjoy family and friends for they are what keep us strong. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Fantastic, but different than what you’d expect. Lighter- SA smoked ancient earth. Gooseberry, roasted jalapeños. Savory and charming. Medium bodied.

This really could be left bank Bordeaux, with a very pure expression of fruit, pencil shavings and dark chocolate. The wine is quite primary, primal even, with intense flavours of candied red fruits - certainly this is more red fruited than black - and a dark, bitter finish akin to coffee beans. The tannins are actually quite mellow, but acidity high, all of which contributes to a strangely Tuscan feel. Nonetheless, it’s a terrific wine that should age very well indeed.

Nailed it with Afghan Lamb Kebabs. Out of the gate it’s bright with a Bordeaux character... then turns slightly underripe vegetal... by hour 4 this all smooths out. It was fun tasting it’s evolution for 6+ hours. Great wine, and recommend with hearty food.

Fresh dark berries and red cherries. Rustic, dusty truffles, medicinal notes along side pyrazine. Cedar wood and Tabasco. Medium integrated tannins and bright acidity.

Second wine and first red wine of our annual DMV South Africa Tasting. Deep garnet core with brick edges. Layered nose with notes of chalk, dust, cedar, truffles, cherries and red currants. Medium tannins (5/10) and well balanced acidity. Medium bodied with dried cherries, a little stoney, dusty, light savory spices and some twigs on the palate. Medium length finish and well integrated. Drink now.

First of the five blind tasted reds.

Medium to deep garnet red with slight bricking on the edges. Barnyard funk on the attack of the nose with chalk, some greenery, leather, gamey notes, a touch floral and a little petrol too. Rounded and well integrated tannins (5.5/10) and medium to medium plus bodied. Well structured with balanced acidity. Light cherries on the palate, cherry tomato, earthy and some herbs. Dry medium plus finish. Drink till 2020.
