Splash decanted immediately prior to service; enjoyed over the course of 90 minutes. The 2021 Flor de Pingus pours a deep, nearly impenetrable ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of predominantly, black fruit: blackberries and black cherries with cigar box, burnt toast, chocolate, and fine baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and tongue smacking. Let’s be real: the 2021 is a wee babe at this point and will benefit from significant cellar time. If you’re like me and curious, drink now with patience. Otherwise, better after 2031 through 2046.

See previous note from March 2022. Very dark Ruby in colour- impenetrable. Blackberry, smoky notes. A rich full bodied dense palate with a tarry note. Dusty. Granular persistent tannins. Again, Thomas Matthew’s drinking window is way too early (to 2025). This wine will cruise to 2030 with ease. When you taste this wine you have a new appreciation of the allure of Tempranillo, in this case old vine Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero. Post Script: The next day - aniseed and a crushed ant note.

Pingus, named after childhood nickname, deep Ruby with concentrated dark fruit aromas and gently smoky notes. On the palate flavors of cherry and plum, licorice, sweet vanilla spice, well balanced, fine grainy tannins, long finish ending with slight oaky tones. Very Nice!

Very dark Ruby with a crimson edge. A closed latent nose after decanting initially. Aromatics of black and blue fruits with Cassis, chocolate, oak spice together with plum and tobacco leaf. I didn’t realise how Tempranillo (100%) could be as rich as this. The same complex aromatics feed through to the full bodied palate. Gorgeous - a dense and thick mouth feel without being heavy. Will leave the next one for a year or two. The 2nd wine of the famous Pingus.

Corked. Dammit.

Ah well, it was worth a try.

Acidity is definitely elevated and this vintage is less impressive than most i have had. Was good with lamb shank.

Produced by Peter Sisseck, of Denmark, arrived in Spain in 1993 to manage a new project and thought about the old vines around the Ribera del Duero. By the 1995 vintage, Peter had found ancient vineyards that inspired him to make "Pingus," after childhood nickname. Deep Ruby, concentrated dark fruit aromas with gently smoky notes. On the palate cherry and plum flavors, sweet vanilla spice, well balanced, soft warming tannins, long ending with slight oaky tones. Very Nice!
