Madiran Tannat

Deep but clear dark purple. Abundant nose of blackberry and meaty cobbler. Full-bodied and tannic palate of blackberry, toasty cobbler, and cranberry. Medium plus acidity and firm tannins.

I’m trying more French wines to expand my knowledge. I had no idea what this was when I bought it. I guess it’s not often you find a 100% Tannat 🤷‍♀️ it’s usually blended to tone down the acidity and tannins. I don’t find it too tannic but it is quite acidic but not intolerable. Nice black fruit on the palate as it describes, oakiness on the nose and a very nice dark garnet color. Sitting out by the pool on this very pleasant Florida evening with a steak on the grill. Deep Ruby, almost purple, aromas of red / black fruits with cedar mint notes. On the palate flavors of red plum and blueberry with herb spice and toasty notes. Medium finish, drying tannins, ending with fruit, oak and spice. Good value!

first sip needed, just to get your palette used to the tartness. Second sip:
Strong, virile wine, no sweetness at all, tart cranberry and pomegranate seeds. Gripping tannins, more from the grape skins than anything else. These needs a few years to mellow out and become less of the red headed step child.

Hint of smokey oak on the nose, tannic, cassis, needs meat. I like it, lots of dense old world flavors with a massive backbone, great for $13

Drinking in 2026. Very meaty nose, at least initially. Interesting. A little tart, a little savory. Some oak, some herbaceous notes. Raspberries, tonka. Still plenty of purple - could still be held for several years.

Hints of rust color. Smells meaty. Flavors are smooth and fine. Has a fine wine style. Very French with a woodsy and berry complexity. This is nice stuff.

I’ve tried excellent Tannats from South America, and this one is just as great. Full bodied, deep red color yet gentle acidity on the tongue. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 2018.

Medium to deep ruby in color; black cherries, cedar, and baking spices on the nose; high acidity; medium tannins; tastes like black olives, pomegranates, hibiscus, and wet rocks with a long finish. Beautiful on the nose, bit a little thin on the palate. Overall, I like it.
