Tannat Blend

Domaine Labranche-Laffont

Madiran Tannat Blend 2016

2nd bottle and still so much pleasure. The well-worked Tannat grape brings notes of black plums; a mineral touch reminiscent of carbon or chemical smoke (not unpleasant), completed with a gourmet chocolate side, and notes reminiscent of pine or cedar sap or eucalyptus. The palate is supple and round with a lot of volume. The wine can still age for several years if we judge by the aromatic density. The tertiary woody touches are well melted, this is a good beefy and greedy bottle which will go as well with a chocolate desert as with a duck breast. Sweet and sour cooking will also go very well.

Bandol Mourvedre Blend

First experience with Bandol... liked it! Dark and thick, almost black. Ripe but not as fruity, earthy and very full bodied, punchy wine with noticeable tannin. A good one for spicy or greasy food, although I will still pick an Aglianico or Uruguayan Tannat over it... — 12 days ago

Château Bouscassé

Madiran Tannat Blend 2015

Typical fleshy wine of the appellation. Fruity notes of blackberries, cassis, black plum, chocolate, eucalyptus. Well-melted woody vanilla tertiary notes. Full-bodied and generous wine with a lingering finish on vigorous round tannins. To drink with chocolate desserts, spicy cuisine, duck southwest style. For fans of tannic wines, this is to be discovered as a matter of urgency, as it is much more accessible than Bordeaux wines. price / pleasure ratio ++

Very enjoyable Tannat blend. Very well balanced and smooth in transitions. Mint, meaty, dark berry fruit but not fruit forward, I must say I’m enjoying it more and more the longer it sits in the glass — a month ago

Just Red Wines

Granite Belt Tannat 2015

Another obscure red variety from the south of France like the Durif from a few days ago this isTannat although some researchers say it may have originated in the Basque Country of northern Spain which could be correct as it was taken to Uruguay where it has enjoyed the warmer climate there, similar to Malbec flourishing in Argentina. I first tried this wine in 2016 at the Toowoomba Wine Show where I found it extremely tannic. 4 years of cellaring since then has served this wine from the Granite Belt well. It is another dense black winter wine showing Blackberry and tarry notes with Raspberry and Vanilla. Rich and full bodied with stern tannins but not as tannic as 4 years ago. Barb who doesn’t normally like big reds very much liked this. This wine has now won 3 Trophies in its Show career winning the Champion Alternative Variety Red Wine at the 2016 Queensland Wine Awards. — a month ago
