In 1972, Alejandro Fernández & wife Esperanza Rivera of Pesquera de Duero initiated the renaissance of Ribera del Duero appellation with area's first modern wire-trained vineyard, their Viña Alta in Pesquera. Their entry level wine is a great value. Deep Ruby with aromas of red fruits and clean spice. Palate shows flavors of red berry fruits, vanilla, spice, and licorice notes, vivid acidity. Firm tannins, medium finish ending with spice and fruit character.

A joyous nose to this 2015 Crianza from Condado de Haza, replete with aromas of blackberry, red cherry, sundried tomato and vanilla. The palate is deep, saturated, and so satisfying: wells of ripe blackberry, black pepper along with a slightly herbaceous edge, with good tannin & acidity, leading to a long-ish finish. This wine takes me back to Malaga, where I’ve drunk the wines of Alejandro Fernandez on several occasions with great pleasure. The man behind Pesquera recently passed; this wine is very much an entry level wine but a great testament to his legacy.

The 2014 ‘Condado de Haza’ by Alejandro Fernandez is a 100% Tempranillo wine, sourced from their estate vineyards. This shows toasty oak with lovely savory character on the nose with red fruits and bell pepper accents. The mouthfeel and texture here is excellent as the wine delivers beautiful earthy tones with red and dark fruit flavors and a touch of chocolate. With bright acidity, this will cellar well over the next decade. Drink 2019-2029- 91

Moderately extracted purple-red, excellent clarity. Canned green bean and black currant notes in nose initially, the veg notes changes to briar after an hour. Black currant and blackberry flavors, chewy tannins, tart berry finish, light but chewy seed tannin astringency in aftertaste. Worth decanting this one at least three hours, else it will be a bit lacking in fruit. Good acidity for food here.

A nose of berry and alderwood

Tart berry, eucalyptus, tobacco, cedar, river stone, and hints of prune juice.
This finishes with licking kumquats off of a cigar box. That citrus acidity.

This was the perfect year for this part of Spain, and continues to make me glad I stored a few away..
