Yesterday’s Wednesday Wine Committee lunch. Normal format of 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert wine. All tasted blind.

Thankfully there was another bottle open because the bottle my glass was from was quite corked. There was more dense and sweet fruit here than I expected...herbal and leather notes are starting to emerge but the black cherry and plum is still center stage. There is also some vanilla pipe tobacco, potpourri and black pepper on the palate and finish. I called this left bank Bordeaux.

A very enjoyable Left Bank Bordeaux. Showing red and black fruits with earth, vegetables, spices, tobacco leaf, wet leaves, black tea and black pepper.

This great vintage red is still young, and needs another 5 to 10 years of bottle time. Already showing nice complexity and mouthfeel.

Long finish with firm tannins and tangy raspberries.

Needs a couple of hours to open up properly and show the tannins and complexity.

Wine Enthusiasts 94 points.

A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 3% Petite Verdot.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$70.

This was my favorite in our little ‘86 showdown. I found the palate to be more lively with higher acidity and more primary fruit than the Gruaud Larose. Underripe blackberries, tar, black cherry and a streak of leather down the middle.

Christmas 2018 dinner, the ‘83 is showing so nicely. Silky smooth finish, pretty nose, very delicate a little leather and gravel with hints of crushed dried rose. Tannin still holding up enough for food but certainly on the softer side of its run.

Loved this. Lots of depth. We tried the 1971 as well which may have had some heat damage. But this was herbal silky wine brought a smile to my face with each sip.

This grand estate owes its name to Connetable Talbot, the English general and governor of the province of Guyenne who was defeated at the famous Battle of Castillon in 1453. Complex aromas of fruit and spice with wafts of sweetness. On the palate red berry flavors with sweet tobacco and cacao, full body, well integrated. Soft tannins, good acidity balance, lingering ending with a mineral edge, perfect now.
