Baron Philippe de Rothschild
Mouton Rothschild For Philippine Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend

The 3rd wine at the First Growth Bordeaux lunch at the Downs Club last Saturday. My contribution to the lunch. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Opulent and Powerful. The experts say this is a 50 year wine and tasting it now at 39 years currently it will definitely not have an issue reaching 50 years. Mint, spice and black fruits. The masses of dry tannins 20 years ago are starting to resolve. Jancis wondered in 2004 if they would ever soften. I have one left which I hope to drink on its 50th birthday in 2036 if I am still around. This was the oldest wine in the lineup and also the most robust.

Very dense and tightly packed. Lean… intense but hard to get to now.

Mar 1st, 20241986 vintage. This is still incredibly young. Telltale lead pencil, cassis, cedar wood. A massive Mouton that just starts to show its potential.

So excited to drink this. Leathery, pipe tobacco on the nose. Forrest floor, old attic mildew, dusty, decomposing musty leaves. Stringent. Tastes like a old leather bound book you found at your grandparents and were like, “what’s that?” and pulled it from its shelf and instead got a face full of dust. But you love it. I love this. It’s everything I love about an old Bordeaux— pure decomposed earth. I would love to pet a lovely, giant Scottish Deerhound while drinking this— a dog as regal and mythical as this wine.

Had this iconic wine from a 3L bottle. What a great experience.
This 19 year old, is dense, rich, elegant, and young with huge tannins.
Showing a phenomenal nose.
Dry on the palate with wood, vegetables, black fruits, earth notes, chocolates, tobacco, herbs and leather. So complex.
Can't even say how many years are in it still, Maybe 50?
12.5% alcohol by volume.
95 points.
