More advanced color, nose, and palate then anticipated. Lacked freshness but there were incredible caramel, orange, roasted tree fruit, and honey notes. Structure was a little loose. A mildly amber colour that makes me think of shrivelled grapes covered in mold. Too ethereal (light) to be a sweet wine, therefore I'd have it as an aperitif too. Apricots and honey and orange marmalade and walnuts and marzipan, tangy aftertaste. A star with #foiegras and a very impressive sweet wine coming from #california and the famous #sinequanon Unctuous is a the adjective for this wine. Rich coffee, fig, pineapple and noble rot aromas dominate the wine. The only thing that would make it better for me would be a touch more acid. A version 4 years younger that is pure fruit, delicate as the 2001 but maybe less developed, less complex. Nothing wrong with that, though 😸. Apparently the winemaker, Monsieur Papin, is called "the poet of Chenin Blanc" by the revered Andrew Jefford and if he said so my only aim is to look for more Papins to corroborate through a field research. This bottle had been opened and in the refrigerator for a few days before I tasted this but it was still quite lively. Filled of peach, orange, and honey. Alcohol stood out a little bit. Incredible concentration and power with an impressive length. Rollercoaster of orange, pineapple, tangerine, grapefruit, clementine and clove. Sweet almond notes intertwine with honeysuckle, honey, bee pollen and mixed marmalade. Orange marmalade prevails on the palate with poached pear and nectarine, quince and beeswax. Excellent in all ways.
