Hot 2. Cold Soak 3. Fruity 4. Tart 5. Sediment Definitions: A. Term describing a wine with fresh aromas and flavors that come directly from the grape, rather than from the winemaking process or from the barrels in which a wine was aged. B. Term used to describe a wine with perceptibly high alcohol. In extreme cases, these wines can leave a burning feeling on the palate and/or rise into the nostrils with intense, almost searing sensations. Generally considered a flaw. This characteristic is more acceptable in fortified wines like port, where it is not unusual. C. Solid matter deposited in a bottle during the course of the maturation process. While a wine with a substantial amount of this requires special handling (the bottle is generally stood upright and then decanted of this), this is generally a sign that the wine was not excessively filtered prior to bottling. D. Sharply acidic or sour; not necessarily pejorative as some whites made for early consumption are prized for this quality. E. Technique commonly seen in the production of Pinot Noir and Syrah whereby the harvested grapes are placed in a tank or vat at a very low temperature to begin a gradual extraction. It is generally believed that this results in dark wines with supple, silky tannins and expressive aromatics. Also known as pre-fermentation maceration. Need a hint? Want us to use it in a sentence? St. Clement Vineyards

Single Vineyard Armstrong Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

92.7, gladly rounding up to 93. This wine has appreciated since the last bottle enjoyed a couple of years ago. This wine poured dark to the glass. Slight violet hue. The nose on this wine is sweet dirty raspberry and cola. The entry of this wine is powerful and yet still quite youthful. Sweet cherry cola and herbal notes abound yet starting to show a hint of age. Towards the finish, chocolate covered raspberries and almonds hit the palate. Still rather tannic. Fine grit sediment with the final 50ml but wasn't about to leave the final few sips behind. This one has another 10 years left, but I think this one is probably 1 or 2 years away from being at the very top. — 14 days ago

Cape of Good Hope Wine Co

Natte Valleij Cinsault 2017

Cinsault is typically a blending grape, but I’m enjoying it on its on. It's really good. Pairs well with the lightness of this Mediterranean dish. Low on tannins but kinda acidic. It's very fruity! #badandboozypod #womenwhowine #blackgirlswine — 15 days ago

Bruno Giacosa

Falletto di Serralunga D'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo 2003

Tawny and mostly translucent. Fruit dominated nose with some funk. Notes of chopped ripe cherries, moist earth, pepper, some molasses and faint red roses. In the mouth, a high level of fruit matched against modest structure and light tannins. Medicinal and a little hot, some raisin notes, not all that balanced. Reflective of the hot year/vintage. An ok drink but will wait to see what 10 more years of age will add to the experience. — 16 days ago

Kenwood Vineyards

Artist Series Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 1986

Still holding. Give it 20-30 minutes. Loads of sediment. It’s what you would expect. No fruit. Loads of earth and spice. Getting long in the tooth. Drink right now — a month ago

Ex Post Facto

Santa Barbara County Syrah 2016

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2016 Syrah is a very pretty wine from Greg Brewer's Ex Post Facto project. Racy and perfumed in the glass, with striking aromatic presence, the 2016 makes a strong opening statement. The red and purplish berry fruit is nicely lifted by floral and savory overtones from the whole clusters. It will be interesting to see where this wine goes in the future. Certainly the debut vintage is promising. Brewer gave the fruit, from Spear, 4-5 days of cold soak followed by a lengthy fermentation/maceration of 45 days or so. The 2016 spent 16 months in neutral French oak. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2018) — 18 days ago

Cherry rock candy, tart, and acidic. Such a well made Gamay! Cool story about the grafting of these vines, too. — 4 months ago
