Sandlands

Lodi Chenin Blanc 2018

My first 2018 Chenin Blanc from Sandlands (not sure how I was so patient to leave one of these until now). Typical of this project, the ABV is very modest at 12%. Popped and poured; consumed over two days with consistent experiences both nights. On the nose, soft white flowers, slightly underripe pear, honeysuckle and lime. Just the slightest touch wooly. On the palate, it’s pear, lime and chamomile. Acid is high but not bracing. Nice, almost creamy finish. Overall, this is balanced and technically very good, straight down the line Chenin Blanc and paired amazingly well with bacon wrapped scallops. Yet, I just wasn’t as excited about this effort compared to previous vintages. The fruit for this bottle was sourced from their estate vineyard in the Mokelumne River AVA which is a relatively recent addition within the larger Lodi AVA. I’m not sure how old this fruit is but I sort of get the sense that the best is yet to come from these vines. Still, very tasty and technically excellent. — a year ago

Château Mourgues du Gres

Fleur d'Eglantine Costières-de-Nîmes Rosé 2014

2019 vintage. Costières de Nîmes AOC. Organic farming. A blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and a dash of Syrah (and Carignan in some vintages). Light salmon colour. Rather timid flowery nose with a hint of watermelon. Juicy watermelon and white peach fruit in the mouth, round and fresh with a mineral/spicy finish. Very good value at 9.50 euro. Abv. 13%. — a year ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2017

So, i over rated this knowing that it will get there. I know. It’s WAY too young, but i wanted to try. I love Mourvèdre, and this would be my pick of i could only ever pick one French wine. It took over an hour for the nose to develop. Tannins are tight as expected, but this bomb of a blend kills it. All kinds of red and black fruit, leave you wanting more. I love this — a year ago

Castiglione Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

Blind wine #3. Dried cherries, violet, bricking at the rim, med + acid, med + alcohol, high tannin. Called this a 2001 Barolo - very surprised to see how young this was, but happy I have some in the cellar 😋 — a year ago

I rated this 94 pts. It’s excellent, but just showing excessive acid, which will relax in time. Everything else is completely aligned.

Masi

Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Corvina Blend 2015

Cherry, raisins, almond, chocolate too, lurking in the back. The palate is very well balanced with a massive acid backbone which lasts for ever, a nice cherry fruit all along, some spices, a very nice matter with some grip. A spherical mid palate powers up an infinite finish with cherry and almonds. Amarone is a great thing — a year ago

Ridge Vineyards

Geyserville Sonoma County Zinfandel Blend 2018

Yes this is young, but it is lovely and has the makings to be great with age. Bramble fruit and plush mouthfeel. Lengthy finish. Jammy notes, but not overwhelming. Shining even more after some time in the glass. — a year ago
