Yarra Yering

Underhill Shiraz 2012

A lovely nose - spice, earth and charcuterie. Really, the previous Delectable note said it all - “more Rhone than Barossa”. A medium weight savoury palate which worked well with home made pizza. With air the aromatics gave more dried meat and charcuterie notes..like a plate of freshly sliced Pastrami. Drinking at its peak I think, but will remain at this level until the end of the decade. Excellent. — 7 days ago

@Jan de Weerd @Doug Powers Yarra Yering has been in good hands since inception. Dr Bailey Carrodus’s last vintage was 2008 I believe. His successor, Sarah Crowe has been a more than worthy successor being awarded Winemaker of the year at least once. It is a special terroir which has been lucky to be under the stewardship of 2 gifted winemakers. The latest vintages keep on overachieving. The Dry Red No. 2 2022 was just awarded Halliday’s Red Wine of the Year.

@Doug Powers 2021 was a stellar vintage in the Yarra.

Giant Steps

Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2021

Brief notes - this is the standard Chardonnay - the individual Cuvées are more expensive. This was most impressive for the standard, reflecting the excellent vintage in most parts of Australia including the Yarra Valley. Citrus more than stone fruit. Easy to drink. — 4 months ago

Dry Red Wine No°2 Shiraz 2005

Amazing! Medium bodied and silky smooth, layers and layers of spice with chocolate. — 14 days ago

Yarra Yering

Dry Red Wine No°2 Shiraz Blend 2019

My 2nd half bottle from Flower Drum last week. Delectable this is the Dry Red No. 2 which is a Syrah based blend. No notes as such but this is a very Northern Rhone style. Like many great wines Intensity without heaviness. Medium to full bodied. — 2 months ago

Giant Steps

Tarraford Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

See previous notes here in 2018 and 2019. An excellent Chardonnay but probably prefer the Applejack and Sexton Vineyards for Chardonnay. — 2 months ago

Yarra Valley Syrah 2021

Pop and ppur yesterday. Notes from 24 hrs open unrefrigerated on the counter. On the nose: olive brine, cabbage, garrigue, blackberry, vaguely like a (WA/OR) Rocks district syrah. On the palate: lovely acidity, solid density, blackberry, earth, stewed cabbage. The juiciness is intense on the finish, almost overpowering the soft grainy tannin. A gorgeous btl. Yum. — 4 months ago

Giant Steps

Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

Brief notes. Sweet red fruits - raspberry and strawberry. Whole bunch influence. An excellent Yarra Valley Pinot Noir with a proven track record but at the end of the day Applejack Vineyard is marginally in front of Sexton Vineyard IMO. — a month ago

Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2015

My last YY 2015 Pinot Noir. A good balance between red fruits and savouriness and probably drinking at its peak. I have always loved YY Pinot Noir Noir back when it was undoubtedly the best Pinot Noir in Australia in the mid 1980’s made by the legendary Dr Bailey Carrodus. A lot more competition for that mantle these days but Yarra Yering is still kicking major goals as recently as 2 weeks ago winning a Platinum award and 97 points for their 2022 Pinot Noir at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London. The following night aromatic red florals. — a month ago

Salo

Chardonnay 2021

A flinty funky nose. Palate is balanced showing pear and wet rock and manages to be creamy on the front palate with a cleansing acidity at the back end. Great winemaking - not surprising when you know Steve Flamsteed (ex Giant Steps) is involved. From a great vintage in the Yarra Valley. — 3 months ago
