Franz Karl Schmitt

Niersteiner Pettenthal Trockenbeerenauslese Riesling 1934

An absolute privilege to have tasted this drop of liquid history. How well it showed is a testament to the provenance and ultimately, the strength of the terrior. Constantly evolving in the glass. How I wished I had more time with it. I believe my dear friend SC described the wine aptly as follow:

A 1934 Trockenbeerenauslese from Franz Karl Schmitt’s plot on Pettenthal , the same vineyard used by KPK to produce this stunning Nierstein auctioned GG in our days. The long aging time reveals here the potential of the terrior, the expression of the soil stands out and dominate the characteristics of the Pradikat, could be even a red wine blindly. The wine is nearly dry, with a refreshing mix of acidity and tannin-like bitterness (soil characteristics?), so complex and long with unique velvety mouthfeel.

NB: Found in an old cellar, unmoved from day 1 by MH, and also generously shared by him at the Keller household. I can't think of a better way to have enjoyed this wine.

I’d be curious if in that era much quality wine was being produced in Germany, given what I know about the economy post WWI @Aaron Tan ? What a find!

@Peter Sultan Wish I could tell you I knew more. Haha. That being said, 37' is the only real vintage being talked about in that era. Prior to that is the legendary 21'. The next great vintage is probably 59'? So I reckon the wars did affect the wines a lot. If only properly stored examples were easier to find. Hahahah.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Graves Red Bordeaux Blend 1923

Just when you thought the oldest wine of the night was the 38' FKA Schmitt Pettenthal TBA, this pops up. Again I'll let SC describe the wine again:

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1923 was the oldest wine of the pre-auction dinner. Still so fresh with a lovely complex attack, a bit hollow [on the] mid-palate that shows an average vintage, and a long finish with a surprisingly good tannic structure. Stunning!

To add to this, I'd like to say WeinArt did an amazing job sourcing and cellaring this impeccable bottle. Kudos to them!
