Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir 2005

Checking out a new wine spot….so had to be Vosne Romanee (for benchmarking purposes 😉).
Selected a great producer and vintage but not Grand Cru/Premier Cru, so interesting to see the difference 🤔
Earthy, leathering, not quite as refined and smooth as the Grand Crus but we are really being picky…still a great bottle of wine…and new venue (we will be back)!

Château Barrail Saint Andre

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Lovely soft tannins. Easy to drink. This blend must be 95% merlot. The 2016 vintage in 2023 is undervalued if you can find it. Enjoyed it for $60 at a high end spot. Worth multiples of that at a restaurant venue. . — 3 years ago

Graziano Prà

Morandina Valpolicella Corvina Blend 2020

Winetrip Veneto.
Visit of Graziano Pra where the focus is on Soave but they also have very good Valpolicella. Nice Amarone from a colder part of Valpolicella so higher in acidity . Beautiful venue incl lunch on their Monte Bisson location. Rating is for the complete tasting.

Plumpjack

Estate Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

A last minute wine put in the lineup that did not fit in. Seemed a bit oaky & disjointed. Maybe better in a different venue. — 5 years ago

Rosemont Vineyards

Kilravock Merlot Blend 2016

This wine gets me very excited about what’s happening with red wine in Virginia. This vintage is even better than the last. It is a well executed red blend (50%CabFranc, 30%Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot) that offers beautiful balance and structure. Fruit forward with aromas of blackberry, caramel and dark chocolate. Paired well with blue cheese! Would also pair beautifully with grilled meats.
This winery is so quaint and charming. Worth a visit. There was a book signing the day we were there. The walls are filled with art for sale. It is also used as a wedding venue.

Scharffenberger

Brut Mendocino County Rosé Blend

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour while we crushed some sushi at One Flew South, waiting for our connecting flight. It’s been a minute since I’ve had Scharffenberger, let alone the Rosé. Still solid. The wine poured a beautiful pink, salmon color with a moderately persistent mousse of relatively small bubbles. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of raspberries, faint strawberry, faint peach and lemon citrus with a whiff of brioche. On the palate, dry with refreshing acidity; plenty to work with our sushi. The finish was medium. More than decent value considering the venue. Drink now. As an extra observation, the new label was a pleasant surprise as I felt the previous label was long overdue for a refresh. I don’t always feel that way as I love the labels of some OG producers but this was needed IMO. Bravo. — 2 years ago

Pelago Marche Rosso Merlot Blend 2009

Gallow Green is a gorgeous rooftop restaurant on top of the venue that hosts Sleep No More and several music and variety acts. As with these attractions, the aesthetic is on point. The salads are tasty if tiny. The pizzas are delicious and taste like they are hiding a wood fired oven round the back somewhere.

$25 corkage is a good thing too.

The wine I brought along has black fruit, supple tannins, tar and leather. It more than held up to the pizzas and, like the food, disappeared very quickly.

My wife and I traveled to the Charlottesville region and couldn’t pass the opportunity to visit the renowned Barboursville Estate as part of our tour of Virginia’s excellent wine country. Lovely scenery and tasting venue. Octagon is the premier offering, in high demand and very well worth it. — 8 years ago

Domaine Prieuré Roch

Le Clos Goillotte Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir 2009

Experienced this producer last year and wasn’t a fan but everyone deserves a second chance….Mr Prieure is redeeming himself…..Sommelier was a big fan too, recommending this over some other big names…..tasting notes: very light and delicate, scents of pickled cucumber (yes, really) and rhubarb. Not our usual deep berry concentration, this one is much more sophisticated, and deserving of the occasion and venue! — 2 years ago

Crianza Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2018

€15.90 on the restaurant wine list. The wine list said it is a blend but the bottle only mentions Tempranillo. Pleasant enough to order again. Restaurant will be changing name/venue soon. Enjoyed our meals here overlooking the boardwalk & beach. — 4 years ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2014

I was excited to dine at the (relatively) new Union Square Cafe. The previous venue closed some time ago and caused a bit of a ripple throughout the New York restaurant scene: Rising rents wreck regarded restaurant. I prefer the look of the new venue. High ceilings, homely yet chic furnishings, beautiful lighting and a cool mezzanine level. It looks the part. The staff could not be friendlier or more helpful. And the food is every bit as good (and goodness me so filling) as it has always been.

The wine list is terrific. There are a pages of legendary wines but plenty of values to be found and the markup is very reasonable, particularly considering that tips are included.

Take the 2014 Produttori del Barbaresco. It is just superb. Classic Nebbiolo through and through. Midweight but with grip, more powerful than the translucent coloring would imply. Delicious now but would last.

It was $90 on the list. Take off the typical 20% tip and you have $72 on any other list. I saw this in a store the other day for $40, so that's a less than 2x retail markup. Not bad and very fair.

I'm looking forward to my next visit to USC.
