Still seems pretty fresh, with dark fruit and some licorice. Held up well over several nights. As much as I enjoy the direction of the “new” Pax wines, it is always fun to go back and sample the originals - particularly when they hold up this well. — 8 years ago

This is the "Originals" Syrah on crack. More concentration, more of everything. I love this wine. It's probably slightly unbalanced, but I didn't care. It's exciting, energetic, has an obvious nod to Cote Rotie, but has it's own identity. — 10 years ago

So young...modern, shows extract and richness but I find it to be a great example of this style. Richly fruited, ripe, mouth-coating with its extract and sweet tannin. Underneath its Gigondas originals remain; soaked black cherry fruit, liquor, boysenberry compote, juniper, cinnamon, roasted rocks, meaty and sauvage undertones, truffle. I think this could go 20 years no problem. — 6 years ago

Adjacent profile wise to Northern Rhone: gamey, mineral & earthiness to it’s core; it’s the decaying rose petals, & hibiscus edges (& lighter shades) that point to its true, Nebbiolo soul. I’ve heard some wine folks mourn the loss of the original Valana, & that the younger family upstarts can’t come close to the originals. I don’t know, but for about 25$ this is is dang-it good Alpine red. — 3 years ago
