Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Red Rhône Blend
2016 vintage. Red plum, hoisin, shiitake on soft wood, cinnamon and cedar, coffee rye, palm bark, lilac. Expansive sour cherry, cranberry, pipe tobacco, leather, apple skin, allspice, nutmeg and clove. Really a perfect Côtes du Rhône from a great vintage, shining, deific at eight years.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2021
Bottled in June 2023, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape ended up slightly below my initial assessment from barrel last year. Nonetheless, it presents a distinctively elegant and refreshing character that’s neatly defined by ripe black cherry, licorice, violet, strawberry and meaty traces. The ambitious 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of my all-time favorites from this estate. Crushed violets, licorice, red and black cherry, ripe strawberry and leafy elements are all pushed forward. Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 1995
Opened about 8 hours prior to service and Audouze’d. The 1995 pours a pale garnet with a transparent core and a watery rim. There significant variation of the rim too. The viscosity is medium and there is no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing (still!) with notes of bright red cherries, anise, garrigue, cedar forest, leather, dry earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The body is quite light and thin…but healthy. The finish is medium. Very pretty; very Burgundian. This bottle belies its age. Drink now and through 2030. — 3 days ago

The 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réservé Pignan is a powerhouse, unfurling with intense black current pastilles, melted licorice, blueberry jam and pencil shavings. Dried orange peel and leafy elements add more layers. Flashy and forward, the full-bodied 2010 is a concentrated long-distance runner with an expansive finish. Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2005
Opened and poured into a decanter about four hours prior to service. The 2005 pours a deep garnet with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears and some sediment. One the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of ripe brambles, garrigue, cool spices, leather, licorice, and espresso. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, tart and sapid. A wine of pedigree and yet, has a rusticity that gives a nod to its origin. Drink now through 2035+? — 19 hours ago

The ambitious 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape evokes a savory aromatic profile that’s defined by earthy scents, tobacco, cured meat, dried blackberry, crushed rocks and leather. Fleshy and forward, the 2005 shows much more evolution than the 2007 does on this encounter.
