St. Estèphe, Médoc

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1971

1971 vintage. Top shoulder fill. Used a Durand but fully saturated cork still required some clean up on aisle 7. Decanted and tasted after 5 minutes. Threw much much less sediment than expected. Decent color with a little browning. Tertiary nose gave way to similar flavors with it being very slightly brickish. In a holding steady phase where there is no shining light to chase after-everything is consolidated and filed away so you're tasting the interpretations of history. Instructive. 6.13.24. — 8 days ago

Château Gloria

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Pretty deep ruby , with a narrow ruby , garnet rim . Quite aromatic with nice blackberry , cassis , cedar , spicy grafite , smoky mineral nuances . On the palate quite sweet , juicy black fruits and creme cassis , round and generous , with mineral grafite , earthy notes on the reasonable length finish. Balanced acidity and rounded fine but noticeable tannins . Drinking well now but will continue to show well over the next 10 years . — 3 days ago

Château Langoa Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Medium deep garnet , quite thin ruby , garnet rim . Quite spicy and dark fruited nose , blackcurrant , cassis , coffee , grafite . On the palate quite juicy with those dark cassis fruits , blackberry , and coffee touches . This has a roundness and fleshiness that is really appealing . Slightly saline with grafite , coffee and cacao touches . The tannins are round and integrated , good refreshing acidity . Decent length , this is drinking well now . Drink now and over the next 5-10 years, I don’t see this being particularly long lived but it is very enjoyable . — 17 days ago

Château Lafon-Rochet

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2016

2016 vintage, PNP but shoulda decanted and double-parked for 2+ hours. Pretty nose. Medium body but fleshier (St. Émilion style) than led to believe. Was nice but missing the taut balance of fruit and tannins that this producer has been so good with the last handful of vintages. 6.14.24. — 7 days ago

Château Tronquoy-Lalande

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Give this a lot of air and it gets lush. Pencil lead and wild just-ripe blackberries. Great balance and lift for 12 year old wine. — 21 days ago

Château Beychevelle

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1970

1970 | Red Blend
Chateau Beychevelle
Bordeaux; Médoc, St. Julien, France
(91-93; Drink 2015-25)
3H decant

(Typical blend as 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc & 4% Petit Verdot; it's unknown to me the exact percentages for this vintage)

Nose has dried plum, truffle, old wet leather, earthy notes, moist tobacco and damp forgotten firewood.
Palate has dried cherry, vanilla/cedar, dried blackberry, sweet cherry, dehydrated plum, garden soil with faint tannins and fading acidity.

Happy Father's Day 2024 to all.

Château Cos d'Estournel

Les Pagodes de Cos Saint-Estéphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Had heard this was ready to drink with a good decant, but it stayed somewhat closed all of day 1. Day 2 it returned with a vengeance and an ample bouquet of cassis, currant, graphite, and spice box. Will be even lovelier eventually. — 5 days ago

Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2004

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2004 Montrose has a slightly rustic bouquet but is quite charming. It offers mainly red fruit, bacon fat, undergrowth and peaty scents, which are very Saint-Estèphe in style. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannins. It is savory and a little dry, especially towards the finish, though there is good weight, and it is well balanced. Perfect to drink now. Château Malescot St. Exupéry

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2006

2nd Ribcap wine. Delicious!

2006 followed the grand 2005 vintage. It was overpriced based on 2005 & critically reviewed as a difficult vintage. I can tell you 06 was overpriced, but still a good to very good vintage depending on the region & producer.

The fruits are classic Bordeaux…nicely ripe; blackberries, black raspberries, very dark cherries, black plum, plum, mix of strawberries & red cherries. Wet, volcanic clay, lead pencil for days, slightly, dry tobacco, dark spices, mix of mostly dry & fresh herbs, clove, nutmeg, some cinnamon & vanillin, volcanic ash, used leather, sandalwood to cedar, forest floor w/ dry leaves, dry river stone, steeped, dark fruit tea, withering, slightly candied; dark, red florals with hints of violets, round, fresh, river stream acidy, a plush, round, elegant, nicely; tensioned, structured, balanced and elegant polished finish that last 90 seconds.
