Spicebox

Domaine Zind Humbrecht

Clos St. Urbain Rangen de Thann Gewürztraminer 2008

Copper-gold colour.
Decadent, rich, sensual.
Medium sweetness, finishing dry.
Very floral, spicebox and gobs of mango, orange marmelade and honey coated nuts.
64g/l RS but the acidity provides great balance.
Delightful wine.

Rudd

Jericho Canyon Red Blend 1998

Cherries, cranberries, bell pepper, leather and spicebox. Lighter and leaner than expected, fine grained tannines, lacking some length and complexity.
A nice wine, but nothing more. Poor QPR.

Clos Saint Jean

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2008

This is a lovely Ch9dP for those who search for élégance and balance and rusticity.
Blood, garrigue, iodine, salty licorice, spicebox, forestfloor and still some plummy fruit remaining. Touch of tangy orange zest bitterness.
Very nice!

Domaine Guffens-Heynen

Tris des Hauts de Vignes Pouilly-Fuissé Chardonnay 2010

Inspired by wine-buddy Thijs, I decided to pull the trigger on this one today.
And he’s completely right.
Explosive nose of fireworks, candied lemonpeel, peach kernel and decadent spicebox aromas. Nice and creamy on the palate, wonderful viscosity, spicy acidity (is there such a thing?) and mineral play on the long and fresh finish.
Kudos to Mr. Guffens.

Le Macchiole

Messorio Toscana Merlot 2006

Big and bold. Unashamedly modern and super-plush. Deep inky plummy fruit, spicebox, vanillapods and a touch of hoisin... all wonderfully backed-up and balanced by only a pinch of Italian acidity.
Must admit I liked this better than expected.. ☺️

Shvo Vineyards

Upper Galilee Red Blend 2015

first wine I'm having from shvo vineyard.
the winemaker used to work at one of Israel's biggest winery and left, bought his own vineyard and that's his playground.
different grapes from mainstream Merlot, cabarnet sauvignon, sustainablity and non kosher are the magic words written about shvo.
clearly a wine critics winery.

this is a red blend of barbera, grenache, syrah and mourvader.
so gsm with added fanculo 😊
one year oak treatment.

14.5% ABV 💪

dense red with long legs 👀

leather and cigar box first. followed by peppercorn, vanilla, dark chocolate. some ripe cherry and dried plum finish the complex spicy 👃

medium + body.
medium - acidity.

silky spicebox with the cherry's tartness and some leather hints 👄

soft, tingling and pleasent tannins. medium🎯 with fruit leftovers lingering.

2015 is considered a problematic vintage in israel. this is complex and balanced. but the spice profile reminds me a 2015 syrah i had from a winery close by. so will be interesting to try another vintage to compare.

it's a very good wine. intresting and satisfying.

excellent vfm (90 nis). israely reds in that price wouldn't usually impress.

had it on it's own. feels gastronomic, we shall find out in a couple of hours when dinner will be served.
later on it worked pretty well with dinner and lunch the next day. feels like an easy day to day drinking red, made better.

looking forward to try some more shvo.

24hr later the fruit came forward and the body felt firmer. still great...

Yao Ming

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

The 2015 Yao Ming ‘Napa Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a silky blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all aged in 100% French oak (65% new) for 18 months. Once in the glass the wine begins to slowly unveil creme de cassis, Turkish coffee, tar and spicebox aromatics that impress. The palate is silky smooth, delivering a really good combination of tension and mouthfeel. Black fruits dance with licorice and allspice flavors on the palate. Seductive, yet mineral driven, this will cellar marvelously over the next two decades. Drink 2018-2035- 93 — 6 years ago
