Pellet Estate Sunchase Vineyard Un-Oaked Chardonnay 2017

Pale lemon in color with a golden hue.

Nose of lemons, citrus, melons, red apples, white pepper, alcohol, light pineapples and herbs.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with lemons, citrus, apples, pears, herbs, light vegetables, spices and black pepper.

Long finish with limes and grapefruits.

This is a very tasty Chardonnay. Spicy finish with nice complexity and mouthfeel. Nice and elegant.

Good by itself or with food. Not bitter nor tart, and great to sip on by the lake.

Easy drinking, but has a lot of alcohol and it's not noticeable at all, so watch out. Tasty and enjoyable.

This is a great sipper on the boat.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

Griffin's Lair Sonoma Coast Syrah 2012

Nose has cedar-y blueberry-blackberry jam, crushed raspberry, newly paved highway, light metallic undertones with minor alcohol heat.

Palate has blackberry jam, white pepper, dried blueberry, blueberry sauce and big chalky tannins. Massive structure, no doubt, this wine needs another 10+ minimum. Yet, delicious tonight. 5h decant.

@Severn Goodwin @David T Huge Pax fan. I tend to agree with @Severn Goodwin on Pax’s single vineyard projects.... definitely need some age on the bottle. With regards to the Sonoma Hillsides wine, I lean towards drinking young with a good 3-4hr decant. With the hillsides wine I would treat it like you would a northern Rhône wine.


Lauren Vineyard Chardonnay 2016

This was my wife’s pick for Mother’s Day yesterday.

Consistently my favorite chardonnay out of Aubert’s lineup, this was utterly jaw dropping. This is one of the best white wines I’ve ever had (and is up there with a handful of SQN whites and older Marcassin Chardonnay). Every time I got a new glass, I meant to write a note, and every time I forgot because I couldn’t get over how good this was.

It was a touch reductive at first pour, but it yielded to a dizzying array of marzipan, nutmeg, orange blossom, lemon cream and caramel dipped golden delicious apple. On the palate, it continuously evolved revealing powdered sugar coated guava, frosted mango, sea salt and honey roasted nuts. It was both delicate and elegant while also powerful and commanding. The finish lingered for what seemed at least a minute. I still can’t get over how concentrated the fruit was alongside such acidity and structure. Sporting all of these characteristics right now is just a true and complex treat.

@Jid R : Yes, I did watch that interview. The increasing age of that vineyard is only going to push the wines to new heights. My first experience with Aubert was actually a bottle of Lauren about 3 years ago, and the bottle was 8yrs old. It was the wine that opened my eyes to how good Cali chard could be. I’ve had them all ages and love them at each stage, but the 5-7yr spot seems to be best. I will say that their Hudson chard is the most approachable and I prefer it with only a few years on it. I don’t think it can hold its profile as nicely as the others. Just my opinion.

@Bryan Kesting : It’s a must! When you come back down, it’s an easy one to request to be opened! I think this 2016 will hold here another 3-5yrs before it sheds some of its gorgeous fruit. But it will be delicious for at least 5-7yrs easily.

Aubert can do no wrong in our minds. Nor can my wife when it comes to my fave fruit cobbler...
Nose displays almonds and white flowers. The palate is so balanced, nuanced, elegant and precise. A perfect structure which segues into some sexy chalky minerality. Moderate sweetness and relaxed acidity define the individual identity of this chard.

First time for this varietal with these guys. Very nice job. Clean, crisp, varietally correct. Nice sense of balance for young wine. No hint of cat pee or grapefruit. Fruit leans toward lemon/lime, kiwi, green seedless grape. — 4 days ago

Recently had ‘16. Royal St. Robert Cuvee named in honor of Dante and Carlo Mondavi's grandfather who taught them to be committed to excellence. Medium Ruby with layered aromas of fresh berry fruits with floral and smoky spice notes. On the palate flavors of strawberry and raspberry with cigar box, oak and herb floral notes. Well balanced, savory fine tannins, long finish ending with oaky earthy notes. Very nice! Has ample room to age. Nice! — a day ago

Charles Ranch Fort Ross-Seaview Chardonnay 2018

Okay... back to back vintages. The ‘18 is IMO a bit more lean, mean, and focused. Ripe pear and Granny Smith apples with a hint of toast. Plenty of intensity, perhaps not as round as the ‘17. Similar in style, I think ‘18 is the better vintage though both are impressive. Balanced..displaying touch of minerality, the wine at this stage in its development needs food.
