Marchesi Antinori

Villa Antinori Toscana Sangiovese Blend 1981

Pulled from my cellar, popped and poured and presented double-blind to the group. In the glass, the wine appears a deep garnet with a translucent core, a slightly orange rim and some signs of fine sediment on the glass. On the nose, the wine is mature with initial notes of Tootsie Roll and old leather bound books. However after about 40min in the glass, the nose brightens up and begins to show more varietal characteristics: cherries, desiccated flowers, fennel, damp earth, leather and espresso. On the palate, the wine is bone dry and the tannin’s are still quite firm. Acid is medium+ and the finish is long. Alcohol is medium. A very lovely mature wine! Guesses were all in Italy but further north in Piemonte (Barbaresco mostly) and much, much younger with most settling on late 90’s. I don’t drink a lot of modern wines from Antinori but this was quite the charmer with 41 years of age on it. If anyone has any well stored examples, drink now with about 40min of air. That being said, there is enough life for these to soldier on for another 5-10 but this is very clearly in the twilight of its life. Something else of note: the cork was extracted completely intact. It was one of those cute little stubby ones more typical of the time. — 2 years ago

Domaine Maillard Père & Fils

Corton Renardes Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2011

Another stunning wine! Probably tied for WOTN. Just an absolutely fantastic GC, and a lesser known producer, but not to be taken lightly. For under $100 you are getting cream of the crop, and something that even at 6 years of age will soldier on and continue to develop for at least the next 10 years. Vibrant and aromatic - crushed clove, fresh pansies, rhubarb, a faint touch of brett to bring the terrior together. Beautiful ruby color, no loss of youth in flavour either - raspberry reduction, nutmeg, dried cranberries, cedar, and a finesse only known to GC Burgundy.

Another special treat to open. Thank you

Hubert Bouzereau-Gruère et Filles

Puligny-Montrachet Chardonnay 2018

The smoke hasn’t cleared on this battle worn soldier. Really strong sense of gun powder! Volatilize, and peeks of lime pith or lemon verbena squeeze through the cracks like light in your lashes, revealing pepper and pecan shell, black mushroom spores and elm, with cigar sweetness and black lime on a smoky battlefield. Palate is lime pith and zest and oil and candied lime sparkles floating down a lemon juice river, with thick, thick lemon pith banks. Kind of a gangly age here, but showing depth and intensity. Need to see this one when it matures, sculpted like an Olympian.

Domaine Vacheron

Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Clear yellow-greenish color; nose of pineapple, stone fruit, goose berries, black currant, and a newly opened plastic toy soldier; steely but balanced high acids on the palate, mostly citrus, halogen minerals, herbs and liquorice and a long mouth-watering finish with a hint of sweetness. This is a well-made Sancerre and the remaining bottles in the cellar won’t be long lived. Had with creamy fish soup and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the late great Russian barytone, singing Moskow nights in the background. — 7 years ago
