Enjoyed trying this after the ‘91 Montelena. Similarities and differences. Picked up signature American oak here with notes of herbs and dill, but not as much of the coconut smell I normally get (maybe that fades with age?). Focused. Leather, baked black cherry pie, muddled rhubarb, bayleaf. Soft and round with very nice depth. Lingering finish. I thought this outdid the ‘85 it was next to quite easily (though that bottle may have been flawed). — 15 days ago
Really special wine. Tannins are in check but full-great acidity and, round, ripe dark huckleberry and raspberry fruit. Medium finish that will definitely do well to age a bit but is accessible now. — 13 days ago
It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a nice one from Napa Valley.
Dark ruby in color with a short purple rim.
Fruity nose of blackberries, blueberries, cherries, licorice, oak, vanilla, spices, metals, black pepper.
Full bodied and bold with medium acidity and long legs.
Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, sweet cherries, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, oak, licorice, spices, coffee and peppercorn.
Medium plus on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries.
This is a nice Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Not what I expected from a Napa Cabernet, but it is drinking very nicely now.
Good right out of the bottle and does not change much later. Not one for long term aging, but easy drinking even by itself.
I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.
14.5% alcohol by volume.

Low-action top, and black black. Mocha coffee with a caramel creaminess, and a vanilla shot. Licorice, cocoa nibs, a motor oil sweetness with banana leaf, rosemary, s’mores, and burnt brownie. Here comes the vanilla as advertised, bordering on extract, with a licorice cameo, molasses, brown sugar syrup, heavy tobacco chaw/plug, into an exquisite date reduction. This one plays games with your mouth, plunging suddenly into darkness with feigned, scraping reluctance then rebounds into jimmying oak, giving it super strength. And a fiery melted candy house. — 14 days ago
From the damned vintage comes another good wine. Is this as full-bodied as the 09 or 10? No. Notes on this wine are black cherry, rhubarb, mint on the nose and just about the same on the entry. Gains a floral note in the middle. Finishes with black cherry and white flowers. Rounded character but acidity is quite present. Tannin are a bit sweet, slightly astringent but doesn't really take away from this wine. If anything it adds a bit of mystery. This was a Coravin glass and a half today, with the remainder likely going down tomorrow. I'd say this is probably just about the time to start drinking on these if you have a few. — 13 days ago
Tasty. Lots of those dark fruit flavors of which I am so fond. Vanilla, black cherry, blackberry, then some spicy raspberry on the finish. A nice little cab to pair with early morning Bucs football from London. Plus, it's a hell of a lot cheaper drinking this on my couch than last weekend at Food & Wine at Epcot. — 20 hours ago
It is a favorite! Oak, smoke and earth. As My wife says, “I taste delicious”. — 9 days ago
