Château Yvonne

"L'île Quatre Sous" Saumur Champigny Cabernet Franc 2018

Château Yvonne, ‘L’île Quatre Sous,’ is 100% Cabernet Franc from Saumur Champigny AOC in the Saumur region of Loire Valley, France. The Vintage 2018. The ABV is 14.5%. 🏰 🍷

👁 This wine is deep ruby with medium intensity of youthful aromas. 👃 The aromas offer blackberry bramble, plum, black cherry, and fresh fig, also, green bell pepper and vegetal notes along with fennel, wet earth, forest floor, cured meat, leather, and Brett.

👄 It is dry, has medium acidity, a medium body, high alcohol, and medium tannins. The flavors are consistent with the nose and the finish is medium.

👏 This wine is savory and rustic – it has a sauvage (wild) quality and fresh black fruit notes to balance all of that organic, earthiness. It is multi-faceted and delicious. 😍

In addition to using organic and biodynamic growing practices, Winemaker Mathieu Vallée pursues a minimalist vinification approach, designed to highlight the grape’s innate quality, purity, and expression.

For example, after being hand-harvested, this wine was fermented with native yeast in concrete vats and is un-fined and unfiltered with no additions besides minimal sulfur dioxide. Despite its youth, there is notable sediment in the bottle.

LaCheteau (Philippe de Charmille)

Soupçon de Fruit Cabernet d'Anjou 2020

This is an easy drinking Rosé from the Loire in France. Showing a pretty color with a nice mouthfeel.

Not fully dry with a touch of RS, which brings it to balance.

Showing raspberries, strawberries, limes, grapefruits, minerals and spices.

Very enjoyable by itself or with food. That's a nice surprise, especially for the price.

11% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

Château de Villeneuve

Le Grand Clos Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc 2016

Odd wine of the night. Cab Franc to top it off. Fresh ripe tomato and tomato leaves, dried herbs (oregano) on the nose. Tastes much better than it smells. Light bodied, with medium plus acidity, slight red fruit feel and herbaceous finish. Again odd wine, not surprising for a Cab Franc, but good tasting experience. — 6 days ago

Le Paradis Saumur Cabernet Franc 2015

Mid-deep garnet dress, fine tears.
Fine red fruit/black mixed nose, typical green notes: pepper, fresh herbs. Mineral chalky notes. Mouth confirming the nose, the famous gusto/olfactive triangle: red/green/brown. Medium tanins, notable final 2015 is perfectly softened with enough freshness to conduct the tasting. Drink now on white meats, pan-fried vegetables and mushrooms, ashy goat cheese.

Robe grenat profond, larmes fines.

Super tropical with loads of ripe citrus, peach, and apple. Slightest suggestion of RS on the front end but finished dry and long. Will be better in a few years. — 16 days ago

Manoir de la Tete Rouge

Bagatelle Saumur Cabernet Franc 2018

Everything from Manoir de la Tête over delivers. Here another outstanding value in line with the Chenin and Pet Nat proceeding. There's lots to appreciate - the smells, the tastes. Smells like black tar, cherries, pine needle, and dark chocolate leather. It's plushy in the mouth with some tannin grip. It goes down as blackberries and dark plum and an ancient limestone salt lick. — 4 days ago

Château de Chaintres

Exmuros Terre de Brézé Saumur Chenin Blanc

Vintage 2019 | I know... infanticide, but I wanted to try this Chenin Blanc because I was curious. It would be no punishment only to smell this wine... so multi-layered: lime, white peach, pear, vague impression of honey, saline, very lovely and broad. The taste has a high acidity and lots of potential. Razorsharp. Very nice wine from old vines, in transition to bio. | Paired with with asparagus, egg and ham, the classic combination. — 12 days ago

Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc 2019

There‘s a nice note of used paperback within the mineral profile here, otherwise this is all comforting red fruits and spice. Elegant, but with deceptive structure and tannin, this could use some time to unfurl. — 11 days ago

Château d'Epiré

Savennières Chenin Blanc 2018

Military Chenin - first rank straight faced silver skinned Savennieres without any sense of humor - not even a smirk.

Accents of pear, lime, jasmine flowers and smoking flint. Honest and transparent.

You can taste the chalky porous rock filters feeding the vines.

Bold austere flavors of lemon and crisp pear and white pepper with a little bitter bite of white flowers just at the end.
