Belle Glos

Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

Las Alturas' Spanish for 'the heights', a fitting name, this vineyard located on one of the highest grape-growing benches in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. 4th gen Winemaker Joseph J. Wagner from a family with farming and winemaking roots in Napa since 1906. Met Joe several times. Deep Ruby (darkest Pinot I have come across, almost looks like a Cab). Rich berry flavors with cedar, spice and vanilla. Lingering ending with sweet oak notes. Consistent quality Nice! A Fav! — 2 days ago

@Sipping Fine Wine as I’m sure you know these wines age surprisingly well - had the 2005-2009 range recently and they were amazing

Educated Guess Napa County Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

2016 vintage more well balanced than 2017. Vanilla, oak, dark chocolate and plum notes linger in the most delicious. One of my favorite Napa Cabs under $30 and definitely a cab worth sharing at a dinner party. Trust me it won’t go wasted! — 2 months ago

Oakville Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

A blend of 88% Cab Sauv, 8% Petit Verdot & 4% Cab Franc, deep Ruby with aromas of juicy red and black fruits, sweet spice with floral notes. The palate is loaded with vibrant ripe fruit, cherry, blueberry and blackberry flavors with vanilla cedar, some cacao and currants notes, well balanced. Fine round tannins with great mouthfeel, long ending with a powerhouse of fruit and sweet spice on the finish. Great now but has plenty of room to run. — a month ago

The Moonlight Run Red Rhone Blend 2012

Amazing p/q. The nose is rich, powerful and endlessly deep textbook barossa shiraz. The tannins are soft and fully integrated into the sweet blackcurrant fruit. No raisins, just soft, opulent, quality fruit. Long. — 20 days ago

Peter Lehmann

VSV 1885 Shiraz 2010

See 2 previous notes. This has shown progressively better at each tasting. An interesting series, the VSV Series (Very Special Vineyard) from Peter Lehmann. In this case the 1885 is planted on its own roots by the Schrapel family in the Ebenezer district since...1885. The 6th generation Ralph Schrapel tends the vines - his signature on the label. A tradition in the Barossa that many are purely grape growers, many of German descent, and not necessarily vignerons. This vineyard is a low yielding 4 acre block. I made brief notes in any event - deep dark Ruby in colour. A classic Barossa palate - black cherry, earthy, dark chocolate flavours with a touch of liquorice. Luscious and mouth filling with softening tannins. Very easy to like and drinking at its peak. A good example of the saying that good wine is made in the vineyard. — 14 days ago
