Springvale Clare Valley Riesling 2024

Grosset — Springvale Riesling 2024
Clare Valley, South Australia 🇦🇺

Overview
A bone-dry, terroir-driven Riesling from the elevated Springvale vineyard in Clare Valley, delivering piercing acidity, mineral tension, and uncompromising precision. Crafted in Grosset’s signature ultra-pure style, this wine showcases the region’s limestone-driven intensity and long-lived structure.

Aromas & Flavors
Crushed lime, green apple skin, lemon pith, and wet stone leap from the glass with striking clarity. Subtle white blossom and faint herbal tones add lift. The palate is razor-sharp and tightly wound, driven by citrus oil, saline minerality, and chalky texture, finishing long, dry, and electrically clean.

Mouthfeel
Ultra-dry, linear, and tightly coiled with mouthwatering acidity that literally pulls saliva back onto the palate. Light-bodied yet intensely focused, the wine delivers relentless drive without any softness or residual sweetness, showcasing pure structural tension.

Food Pairings
Oysters with lemon. Ceviche or crudo. Sushi and sashimi. Thai lime and chili dishes. Fresh goat cheese. Simply grilled white fish.

Verdict
A thrilling expression of Clare Valley Riesling at its most uncompromising: precise, mineral, and brutally honest. Not a crowd-pleaser wine, this is a terroir statement built for purity lovers and long-term aging potential.

Did You Know?
Clare Valley’s high elevation and limestone soils are responsible for some of the world’s most age-worthy dry Rieslings, often developing toast, honey, and kerosene complexity after a decade or more in bottle, despite starting life razor-sharp and austere.

🍷 Personal Pick
This is the driest Riesling I’ve tasted in recent years, intensely palate-cleansing with an unforgettable mineral finish. A true acid lover’s wine and a masterclass in site expression. Not gentle… but deeply compelling.

Alsace Riesling 2013

Always good to see a screw cap on a European Riesling. Aromas of Pear, green Apple and Kiwi Fruit on nose and palate. The palate also has a creamy texture with a refreshing grapefruit twist at the end with Medium minus acid. Subtly different to German Dry Rieslings just over the border. A good time to drink and excellent value for money. — 6 years ago

Brand (Turckheim) Grand Cru Riesling 2005

After drinking mostly slightly off dry Mosel rieslings over the last year, this 14% abv grand cru from Alsace is a bit of a bruiser. Quite petrol-y on the nose. Palate is quite fat and unctuous, with nice peach and white fruit coming through. Acid is there but not super present. Fun to try for sure. With some air this really comes into balance. Very nice. — 7 years ago

Mölsheim Riesling 2014

This bone-dry Riesling shows loads of green apple fruit, crushed rock, and some pleasantly, sponti-tinged, petrolly scents on the nose. Fresh, broad, and very minerally in the mouth, increasing as the finish goes on. Not for those who like fruity Rieslings, but very well done. — 8 years ago

Will get fruiter and more baroque with age. 2014 is a leaner vintage as well.

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2017

Often the Grosset Polish Hill doesn’t live up to its billing as perhaps Australia’s finest dry Riesling but with this 2017 it probably exceeds expectations. It is simply fabulous. Some ripe lusciousness to the mid palate amid lime and lemon notes, but finishes bone dry. My first of 4 bottles so I will enjoy the journey over the next 5+ years if I can keep my hands off it. HH said it is shaping up as one of the greatest Polish Hill Rieslings. — 5 months ago

Great Southern Riesling 2009

Aromatics of Talc, white flowers a little peach and grapefruit. On the palate citrus and peach with diminishing acid. Just a fabulous mature Riesling with just a hint of petro chemical developing in the form of paraffin. It stamps the Great Southern in Western Australia as one of the premium Riesling districts in Australia. One of the 1001 wines and deserves to be. James Halliday wrote “year in, year out, one of Australia’s best Rieslings”. — 5 years ago

Hanlin Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2018

Hot off the Press. Always one of Australia’s better Rieslings over decades. Dried white flowers on the nose. On the palate bracing citric acid with the tension you would expect from a young Riesling. A long life ahead as always. I still have a couple of the 2002 left. — 7 years ago

Estate Grown Finger Lakes Dry Riesling 2017

Always a notch above the pack of FLX dry Rieslings. Good concentration, fine texture and some complexity. Seamless and perfectly balanced, with essential Riesling fruitiness unmarred by reduction or by the crude, dark minerality that shale-heavy vineyards can sometimes convey. #flxriesling #wiemer — 7 years ago

Trarbacher Huhnerberg Spätlese* trocken Mosel Riesling 2009

The nose on this wine is magnificent. Words cannot describe. Gorgeously filigreed. A hint of aged Riesling. Palate has crystalline purity. Mineral. Gorgeously citrus. One of the best Rieslings I’ve ever had. Not overwhelmingly concentrated. But so balanced it’s damned near a work of art. Bought from Fass Selections. — 8 years ago

Mosel Riesling 2020

I don’t usually get German Rieslings because I have a hard time drinking a glass by itself. However when paired with spicy Chinese food, the wine is crisp and it’s hints of peach, help balance the plethora of spices. Refreshingly sweet on a hot day — 4 years ago

The Florita Clare Valley Riesling 2012

Kerosene aromas - some toast. Lovely mature Clare Valley Riesling. Palate has filled out with the influence of citrus diminishing and stone fruit increasing - under ripe peach. Nearly up to the standard of past Rieslings from the storied Florita Vineyard where legendary Rieslings were made for Leo Buring by John Vickery back in the 1970s. Next day strong citrus flavours - remarkably young for a 9 year old Riesling. Will go for at least another 6 years. — 5 years ago

Gaia Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

Very deep crimson in colour. More cassis than tomato bush - throw in some mint and liquorice. Medium to full bodied yet with great intensity in this excellent Clare Valley Cabernet: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc. Thankfully (IMO) no overt Clare Valley menthol (like Wendouree can be). Palate has lovely black currant flavours with fine persistent tannins. Jeffrey Grosset is better known for his award winning Rieslings but has made a beauty with this Cabernet. Has the fortitude to go another 10 years if so desired. — 6 years ago

Bürgel Spätburgunder 2011

KP likes to say that he makes pino for fun. However, if this wine is of any indication, KP's pino's are as serious as any of his rieslings. The 11' Burgel would easily give the Burgundies of the vintage a run for their money. In fact, it's apt to say that the wine was very Burgundian, given how most placed it in the region in our blind.

The wine's in a great spot for drinking at the moment. No greeness or lady bug. Bouquet of red and black cherries, sous bois, floral spice, mushroom, soy. The palate's energetic and tangy, fruit's a little more dried out with a more profound spice element, and a touch of creaminess. Silky texture, with tannins and oak fully resolved. There's a sort of balancing VA, which also brings savouriness - I feel this is what makes it quite Burgundian. Up for discussion of course.

It's good to see a pino from when KP still bottled them in riesling bottles - perhaps from when he still thought of them as "fun". This is the oldest pino that I've drank from Keller (would have been the 07' Burgel Felix last year if it wasn't corked. FU cork!) and I think it's safe to say he never did treat his pino's lightly. I mean, it's arguably even crazier now - we did spend four days just sorting the Morstein pino grapes, berry-by-berry, in 2017.

Unpopular opinion: KP's spatburgunder's are not value buys anymore (heck! The 2015 Morstein had a hammer price of 610€ in last year's VDP auction). For me, there's still better wines to be found in Burgundy at the prices that the Keller pino's go for. That said, with the rising prices of the latter, this opinion may soon be invalid.
