Sailor Seeks Horse

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2022

Certainly in the conversation as to the quirkiest producer name. From the d’Entrecasteaux Peninsula south of Hobart where there are other big names in Tassie Pinot like Home Hill Estate. No specific notes but these wines have that trademark voluminous mouth feel you get from this terroir - surprisingly for the cool/cold climate. Red and black fruits. Delicious is an overused descriptor but there is no other word to describe this. — 25 days ago

@Bob McDonald there’s an interesting back story written by the vineyard owners about the name “There was a handwritten sign on the wall at the Red Velvet Lounge in Cygnet, our local coffee and cake respite from the Tasmanian weather. It said, “Sailor Seeks Horse” and went on to explain that the author had sailed solo around the world and ridden across the US from coast to coast and back again. On a mule. He’d then decided he wanted to travel around Tasmania by horse but didn’t have one. So, was there anyone who would lend him one? If they didn’t have a horse then a pony would do.”
Actually Bernie Herberts couldn’t acquire a four legged friend and bought a $10 bike at the local tip and rode it around Tasmania. Bernie has written a number of books about his travels.

Dr Edge

South Tasmania Chardonnay 2019

(The front label doesn’t give much away but this is for Dr Edge South Tasmania Chardonnay 2019.)
Intense and linear with Pink Lady apple bite and pucker. Great acid. Lovely detail and shape. Apple and citrus and a bit of tropical.

Mewstone

d'Entrecasteaux Channel Tasmania Pinot Noir 2017

As previous Delectable notes. Still whole bunch notes with an aromatic red fruited perfume. A luscious texture in the mouth with great length. From the most southerly vineyard in Australia. Typical of the terroir of the d’Entrecasteaux channel south of Hobart. Similar to its illustrious neighbour, Home Hill Estate. — 3 months ago

Penfolds

Bin 23 Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2018

This is Penfolds best expression for Pinot Noir being made from fruit sourced in the Adelaide Hills, Henty and Tasmania. Just had a glass with the entree. Mid crimson in colour with a tawny brown rim. Aromas and flavours in the stewed red fruit spectrum. Soft tannins - drinking well now. — 4 years ago

Bin 311 Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2018

See previous note from August 2022. The epitome of a modern Australian Chardonnay - struck match sulphidic notes with cool climate fruit from choice vineyards In Tumbarumba, Tasmania and the Adelaide Hills. White stone fruit and citrus with mineral characters and low acid. Not for long keeping but delicious right now and for a few years. — 2 years ago

Pooley

Butcher's Hill Pinot Noir 2020

When in Rome do as the Romans. Currently on Bruny Island south of Hobart and enjoying the local bounty like Oysters and Fish and this lovely Pinot Noir from Pooley who are in the Coal River district. Lovely aromatics of dried red and black cherry with a whole bunch influence. A light to medium weight palate. — 3 years ago

Rabbit Ranch

Central Otago Pinot Noir 2017

Classic Pinot from this region, Smokey, blackberry bramble, citrus acid city.
Oddly, it hits all of the things I want from this region very well. Central Otago is the closest to Tasmania, in my Pinot Noir likings.
