My first experience with a Friulian Pignolo...Wow..what a simply perfect pasta/pizza wine. Nice bright berry red color... medium weight on the palate...smoke, BlackBerry fruit, sweet red fruit and brilliant lively acidity...perfect foil to red tomato sauce and sausage pizza. Only problem being that the balance, refreshment quotient, and cravability mean a single 750 is not enough. Lost the battle w/wife for last swallow! RS Venezia Giulia Merlot - Pignolo Blend 2019

RS is raw elegance, not quite the wild spirit of Slatnik. An aromatic trip with two keys, sequential amplitudes, each time you go in, on repeat.

The basic level is bing cherries, prune, game, and brown leather. Some chauffeur, maybe alcohol, lifts this to a more interesting, brighter red strawberry, cedar, rose petal, acetone profile.

Elegant, concentrated integrated post nasal happenings too. Soft texture wraps and protects against high acid chalky minerals, grippy tannins. Dried strawberry plumb finish.

RS18 Merlot Pignolo 2018

RS18 is a sublime texture of crimson velvet sweatpants and also a rich concentrated core of saturated sweet stewed fruits. A total standout. Some won't tolerate. This is unapologetically raw and oozing with VA. But like it or not, this is an experience and I like experiences.

Deep aromas of spiced cranberry and apple cider turn to flavors of syrupy dates and grape jelly. Plays tricks on the mind. Is this really sweet? Or just perception?

What a big, burly wine! At 10 years old already, this could probably have gone another decade in the bottle. The tannins were certainly present, but they had certain sweetness about them. Flavors of dark fruit, chocolate, leather, and tobacco dominate this massive wine. What a perfect pairing with our prime rib Christmas dinner. I will definitely seek this one (or other pignolos) out in the future, though I'd like to taste one with even more bottle age! 100% Pignolo. 12/25/21. — a year ago
