Domaine Mule Blanche Crozes-Hermitage Syrah

2017 vintage. I am less familiar with Jaboulet's whites, but this is excellent. Hard to find the right information on this wine, apparently a 50/50 Marsanne Roussanne blend. The back label states it's whole clusters fermented partially in egg-shaped concrete vats, whereas some critics mention wood-fermentation. In any case the wine is drop-dead gorgeous. Captivating nose with ripe yellow prunes, flowers and brioche. Concentrated with layers of white stone fruit and more exotic hints of pineapple, fresh herbs and an impressively long aftertaste. They say wines reflect the owner/winemaker. In this case I believe Caroline Frey can live with the adjectives "intense", "complex" and "graceful". Well worth the price tag — 5 days ago

Les Jumelles Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1961

Tasted blind. Amber tawny, not too thin. Northern Rhone nose, very exotic. More specifically you can guess Cote-Rotie on this wine just from the nose. Notes of black fruit, graphite, gravel and what my wife would say is dirty socks. Guessed 89 La Turque, which (looking back) is a complement to how well the 61 performed today. — 2 months ago

La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah 2006

Wine of the night, of course. 2-hr decant, could have gone for more. Opened slowly and we reveled in its charms. Classic Hermitage profile, roast meat, iron-rich (liver), olives, soy sauce, citrus peel. Multifaceted. Succulent nose. Delicious right now but could go for a while. Brilliant stuff. — 9 days ago

Le Grand Pompeé Saint-Joseph Marsanne

2018 vintage. Marsanne 100 %. As for the name Le Grand Pompée, just ask your friend who is always spying on you aka Mr. Google. Granite soils. Brilliant light yellow. Nutty and flowery nose. Rich, slightly monolithic but with good purity, fresh acidity and good length with retronasal grilled hazelnuts. Good value under 20 EUR. Abv. 13,5 %. — a month ago

Domaine de Thalabert Crozes-Hermitage Syrah

2017 vintage. Much more depth and complexity compared to the 2014 I had lately. Very dark cherries, spices and a hint of leather. In the mouth layers of black cherry and amarena cherries, a slight jamminess balanced by good acidity. Retronasal amerana cherries. Very good length. The benchmark wine for Crozes-Hermitage. Highly recommended. 29 euro. Abv. 13,5%. — a month ago
