I know these are built to age but after a number of nights of drinking wonderful older wines we wanted something a bit…fresher tonight. With a 3+ hour decant this definitely fit the bill. Very deep in the glass - almost purple. Quite burgundian but the crunchiness keeps this in Beaujolais. Excellent red fruit. Tannins are quite tight and teeth staining but the finish is lovely with great refreshing acid. Nice pairing with simple roast chicken thighs, and an excellent value <$30. Going to send some to storage. — 3 years ago
Tasted blind, 3 very different wines but all 3 were excellent and showed their character well.
A nice Bordeaux nose, typical left bank, black currant, graphite, pencil shavings, cedar, and some caramel. Very rich and large palate, good power, tannins are enveloping and have barely started to show more suppleness, good length too. Delicious and number 2 or 3 depending on the taster. 92-93

Bin 0 has been made continuously since the 1890’s and was regarded as the premium Shiraz from Bests until they introduced the Thomson Family Shiraz (first made in 1992). A Thomson Family Shiraz was not produced in 2009 so the best Shiraz from the estate went into this wine. The colour was a very dense Ruby. Dusty dried plums on the nose together with black pepper and spices. The palate has latent energy - self contained power, yet to reveal all of itself but remains opulent. Amazing how good this wine is considering the late heatwave conditions in this vintage in the Grampians. Possibly saved by the inclusion of old vine material from the 1860s which would normally go into the Thomson Family Shiraz. A great wine, still with a long future, easily through to the end of this decade. My first of 3. Next in a few years 2027? — 4 months ago
Tasted this directly after the Bergstrom I rated and omigosh how I loved it both for similarities to Bergstrom (ripe) and differences (so much baking spice and Vanilla Coke). I dunno. But both this and the Bergstrom are that person you meet who has their shit together and friggin’ look good doing it but, like, that’s not just their Instagram persona, they actually are. When they give you their number and actually text you you’re honored.
I would like these wines’ numbers. Promise not to overtext (maybe but words are my thing) — 5 years ago
