Cascade Brewing

Vlad the Impaler 2017

According to label, “ Quad and blond ales aged in bourbon and wine barrels with orange peel and coriander”, 11.6% alc/vol, part of their Northwest Sour Series. Aged two years. Brown orange in color, slightly hazy, good pinpoint fizz on opening. Light orange and coriander aromas. Solidly tart, with orange, pine-spice-white pepper flavors with a wine-flavored finish (cherry, berry, maybe pinot noir in those barrels originally?) A nice quaffable beer for the cool seasons, worth some slow sipping over good conversation. A gift from my brother in Oregon. Worth seeking out. Recommended serving temp is 40 degrees F but if you let it warm, woody flavors and some astringency become apparent. But drink it as you like; these people create their own style ales so no rules, really… just stick to drinking it your way — 5 months ago

Tenuta Sette Ponti

Crognolo Toscana Sangiovese 2017

Last ‘17 in cellar! In the heart of the Chianti lies Estate of Sette Ponti, 15 miles northwest of the city of Arezzo, past village of San Giustino Valdarno. Has 10% Merlot, aged in French Allier barriques, deep Ruby with red fruit aromas and floral notes. On the palate blackberry, plum and cherry flavors with blossom notes, spice and fine integrated tannins. Good balance, long finish ending with some oak and mineral tones. Nice! Will age a bit more! Tasting well now! — 2 months ago

Estate Syrah 2015

Shay A
9.3

This was one of the red wines I served for my annual WWC hosting, alongside a 2016 Pellegrin Sauvage, 2017 Chacra CyC, and a 2013 Myriad 100% WC Las Madres Syrah.

I was fortunate to have the 2014 of this a few weeks back and it was extremely sexy and ready for business. This was a bit more closed off, even after almost 2hrs in the glass before most got to it. Dark and inky in the glass. Sported a bit of northwest funk on the nose, but fairly tame. More smoked meat/bacon fat as opposed to the Cayuse/Rocks type funk, and even some Andes mint. Richness carried over to the palate with jerky, licorice, coffee grounds, and peppercorn crusted blackberries and black cherries. A wonderful wine, but hold another few years for it to really strut.

Tenuta Le Potazzine

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Delectable Wine
9.7

Dusty, smoky and darkly floral, the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is easily one of the most successful wines of the vintage. There are depths currently unseen in this youthful beauty, as nuances of cherry and shaved cedar evolve in the glass. This is soft and enveloping, both pinching at the palate with zesty acids and minerals and soothing it with an elegant display of ripe fruits. A fine layer of tannin lingers, just enough to help the 2015 evolve gracefully. I’m reeling at the balance and elegance on display here. Whether it’s the high elevations of their northwest vineyards or the pursuit of purity this family upholds, this bottle totally reaffirms in my mind that Le Potazzine created one of the most harmonious wines of the 2015 vintage. Russian River Valley Rosé of Pinot Noir 2018

Catching up on some delayed bottle posts...no notes.

My great friend/coworker invited me over to his house for a belated celebration of my birthday. We enjoyed this bottle, alongside some delicious, local Indian cuisine, while touring around West Hill Lake in northwest CT in his electric pontoon boat.
