Very tasty sierra foothills zin. Newsome Harlow has the best wine of the Murphys downtown tasting rooms. They make a nice series of single vineyard zins that go for just under 40 bucks. They also make a shake ridge and kirschenman (turley vineyard). Of the calaveras county wines, I'd put newsome up there with prospect 772 and forlorn hope. — 4 years ago
30ish bucks i think and it's a solid value.
After uncorking, I sniffed the wine in bottle and got a strong presence of molasses and brown sugar on the nose. But once it was in the glass, that aroma was totally absent. Cherry, raspberry up front, plum on the end, baking spices, little clove and allspice. Didnt feel hot and saw that it was 14.3%. Newsome is known for their zins. Their calaveras zin goes in the 20s and is a great value.Their single vineyard zins (shake ridge/kirschenman/big john!) are outstanding for under 40 bucks. Prospect 772 is my favorite rhone producer in calaveras county. Forlorn hope makes great natural wines. Newsome harlow is the zin master. Calaveras county is a gem in the sierra foothills. The tasting room is in murphys, which is one the most quaint towns in california. It's 2 hrs from the bay area, 45 min from skiing, and endless gold rush towns to explore. — 3 years ago
