Mt. Eden Orchard

Henschke

Cyril Henschke Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1986

100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 1 year in new French and American oak barrels, while I get the Barossa fruit feel, this also reminds, at this age, of 1980s Napa/Sonoma Cabs, close to mature, very well-balanced, complex, long, lingering finish, terrific Barossa Cabernet!! Purchased at Henschke in 1989 (my first and only visit) and shipped home via a now-defunct import/shipping company in Alameda, California (I also bought some 1986 Mt. Edelstone Shiraz and 1985 Hill of Grace Shiraz on that same trip!!) — a month ago

@Bob McDonald, I have had both, I might have 1 bottle of each left, though due to consolidation of wines in random boxes I can’t be sure — finding this Cab was a fluke. But I hope I do find the two Shiraz (I think I originally bought 6 each HoG and Cab, and 12 MtE).

@Bob McDonald, I don’t know if you can see my Taste Insights in Delectable, but if you can, check under Shiraz-South Australia — I checked in the 1986 Mt. Edelstone about 8 1/3 years ago and thought it was almost perfect (9.9, same as 1977 Grange), so I must have consumed a 1985 HoG before joining Delectable.

I’ll check it out Doug when I get a tick.

Mount Eden Vineyards

Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir 2013

4th wine of BYOB blind. Very light with a slight effervescence, leading us to call this as a natty pinot. Was surprised it was such a classic. Have had Mt Eden Pinot before and this was not in the same neighborhood of depth/forest floor. Alas, not my favorite vintage — 9 months ago

Pewsey Vale Vineyard

1961 Block Single Vineyard Estate Eden Valley Riesling 2018

Delectable Wine
9.2

Limpid, green-tinged yellow. Mineral- and spice-tinged citrus and orchard fruit scents are complemented by deeper melon and peach flourishes. Vibrant and precise on the palate, offering sappy Meyer lemon, pear, quinine and honeysuckle flavors and a touch of bitter peach pit. Closes very long and nervy, with a resonating mineral note and lingering citrus fruit character. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, December 2021)

Henschke

Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz 2013

Mount Edelstone is Stephen’s favourite Henschke vineyard - planted in 1912 by Colin Angas and sold to Cyril Henschke in 1974. I have 7 vintages of Mt Edelstone in my home cellar but somehow missed the 2013 so I bought a bottle -released from the Henschke museum. This was absolutely delicious and early in its drinking window is to 2045+. Chosen for the masterclass to taste beside the current release 2019 as they were both from drought years. A beautiful fragrant perfume. Black pepper, sage, spice and plum pudding. First released at 6 years of age. A brilliant wine. Particularly loved by my wife Barb. — 5 months ago

Rivers-Marie

Bearwallow Vineyard Chardonnay 2021

First time with Rivers Marie. And very satisfied. Classic CA style with vanilla and ripe fruit, but not over the top. Easy drinking. Still slight preference for Mayacamas, Mt Eden, or Hirsch. Or Staglin :-) — 8 months ago

Henschke

The Wheelwright Shiraz 2017

This is a Henschke Shiraz Cuvée I haven’t tried before but it is from the Eden Valley where the legendary Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone come from. Made from 55 year old Shiraz vines. Cherry and raspberry aromas underpinned by savoury, peppery spice and dried potpourri florals. Not unlike Mt Edelstone in that respect. The palate is rich and round with some old vine persistence supported by bold tannins. Celebrating at The Melbourne Cup - the horse race that stops a nation on the first Tuesday in November. — a year ago

Williams Selyem

Weir Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

13.8% ABV, 16 months in barrel 57% new oak.
Some clonal material from Mt. Eden which traces back to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
Savory red fruits, aging well. Beautiful wine!

Henschke

Peggy's Hill Eden Valley Riesling 2022

I believe this is my first time with a Henschke white. Intense citrusy nose along with florals and undertones of petro (nothing even close to a Grosset). A very zesty palate of some orchard fruit and plenty of acid. A moderate finish that I expect will extend once things better integrate. I assume like many Australian rieslings this will age , Is that a valid statement @Bob McDonald ? — 5 months ago

@Ira Schwartz Over the weekend I tasted the full range of Henschke cuvées with Stephen and Pru Henschke and a group of wine lovers. Julius is their top Riesling from the Eden Valley and then Peggy’s. Both could easily age 10 plus years. Some fruit for Peggy’s is sourced from other growers. Eden Valley (home of Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone) is one of the best districts for Riesling in Australia.

Villa Mt. Eden

Grand Reserve Fox Creek Vineyard Zinfandel 1999

I’m becoming a bigger and bigger fan of quality mid-priced reds with one or two decades of bottle age. #sierrafoothills #zinfandel 25 years in, not surprised to be greeted by nutty sherry, caramel, toffee notes on nose. No primary bramble fruit aromas left. Palate was delightful with unexpectedly sturdy acidity, ghostly traces of tannins. No fade on second day after uncorking proving this wine could go even more distance. Paired well with plant-based pepperoni pizza. — 9 months ago
