The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Lena di Mezzo mixes crushed blackberries with plum sauce, wild exotic spices and dark chocolate. It’s remarkably fresh for an Amarone, casting silky textures across a medium-bodied frame, but it’s supported by vibrant acidity and a mix of tart wild berry fruits and minerals that saturate the palate. Notes of spiced orange peel, medicinal cherry and sweet herbs linger long over a bed of rounded tannins. There’s just the slightest hint of heat here, but the balance is otherwise perfect. My first Etna wine. Impressive mix of lots of things I like from different grapes, all in one glass. Fruity and fresh but with depth , spice, and complexity. Somewhat pinot like in weight, but with tannin and structure. And even the sour cherry notes of a nebbiolo. Then there is a more meaty, herbal ending, like a southern rhone and tannin that gives a real firmness without weight. Balanced and really interesting. Would buy again in a heartbeat. Good alternative to chianti or fruitier expressions of rioja. Med bodied but with real fruit freshness and interest. — 7 years ago

It is grown in a vineyard 1 km away from the coast on the Mar Grande close to Taranto
The wine is great, textural and quite saline.
