Maybe it was the spot (Tessa in NYC) maybe it was the company (my wife and buddies Kelly and Andy) or maybe it was being excited about seeing The Mavericks at the Beacon but by popular acclaim we loved this Umbrian. Good fruit forward with a hint of minerality but really long on first and second effects. So heck, we got three. Luckily the restaurant was next to the show and the Mav's delivered. — 8 years ago
Pioneers at the onset of the Super Tuscan movement. Their first harvest was in 1968 (the 1st vintage Sassicaia released to market.) The name is derived from the root word "vigore" or vigor. #revolutionary #mavericks — 10 years ago
On the back label it reads, “Der Tradition verpflichtet. Nur hochwertige Rheingauer Rieslingweine mit kräftiger Saure, unter strenger Selbstkontrolle der CHARTA erzeugt, düfen dieses Zeichen tragen. Diese Weine sind besonders zum Essen und allen geselligen Anlässen empfohlen”.
That roughly translates to, “Committed to tradition. Only high-quality Rheingau Riesling wines with strong acidity, produced under strict self-control of the CHARTA, are allowed to bear this sign. These wines are particularly recommended for meals and all social occasions”.
I’ve been wanting to try these wines ever since I heard stories of Georg Brueur and Bernd Phillipi being total mavericks and spearheading the dry Riesling revolution in Germany, and this sure delivered. While not truly grand in any sense, it proved the ageability of the concept then. Still relatively fresh with a nose made of herbs, pear, grapefruit, anise, sea breeze, smoke, and hints of petrol. On the palate, really ethereal and pure, with citrusy elements, intense salinity, and laser-like acidity. Finishes long and nuanced. What a pleasure to have drank this. — 2 years ago
This great IPA will go great with grilled sardines marinated in tapenade. — 9 years ago

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this afternoon with our first show of the season, a popular artist event with The Mavericks / Nick Lowe / Los Straitjackets. A lot of guitar talent on stage today! — 2 years ago
Delicious alongside a classic Gaspé Nova on rye from Russ & Daughters. A worthy and appropriate pairing, as both are top-quality choices from producers who started as mavericks and developed into respected and loved institutions.
Very elegant and refined, mousse is tingly rather than creamy but not aggressive or unpleasant. Classic blanc de blanc firm structure, citrus/brioche character. A very compelling bottle.

When in Argentina drink… red sparkling? A dry espumante made with the Bonarda varietal , one of the great (volume wise) grapes for bulk wine here. Seco style red sparkling virtually unheard of, a strange factoid given so many other styles of sparkling wines come out of an Italian saturated population. Persistent mousse, quite dense in color & the palate- could compete with many a Modena counterpart. Paired w last family meal of papas pastel y ensalate. Made by one of the young mavericks at stalwart Zuccardi. ‘17 release, and 30 months aged in bottle, so made not without some serious forethought & design. — 2 years ago
