Schiava is a white wine dressed up as a red wine, like a pretty girl dressed up at Halloween as a male figure, say David Bowie or Michael Jackson — 3 years ago
What a playful, lively burgundy pinot! Rose petals and cherry, hay and an earthy thing. Quite inviting. The palate is wonderfully made, a strong acid drive, a silky mouthfeel which leaves a layer of tenderness on the sides and which lasts for ever, even after the fruity notes of the finish fade away, a good mater with great balance, a good, powerful mid palate with a power house of a fruit and gentle tannins that help this silky layer expand for ever. This is a serious burgundy Pinot, and I'd like to have that every time I pop up a bottle from these parts. Organic wine. It raised to challenge of a spicy (hot hot Trinidad scorpion hot) dish which is not usually a burgundy thing. — 5 years ago
Another super interesting wine by Deirdre Heikin. This blend is 90% Marquette and 10% La Crescent. Two northern american grape variety and the wine shows that non vitis vinifera varieties can make very good wine. The nose is a bit foxy at first, and the taste is then very interesting, good acidity level, slightly sour, notes of herbs and berries but still very round. This profiles definitely reminds me of alpine wines such as Mondeuse or even l’Etraire de la Dui, although these are vitis vinifera.
Sign of a real good wine: this bottle only got better on day 2 and 3...

Grenache Syrah Masera 2015 @2700, W&G, 190525 — 7 years ago
What an amazing wine. Super nose that jumps out at ya. Big cherry. Big big fucking cherry. Spices, plum, semi sweet cocoa, such aromas. Totally spellbinding. Also a sense of gamey, meaty and smokey aromas add complexity. Awesome. Palate is vibrant, deep and so juicy, with amazing fruit and terrific acid and structure. What concentration! This has tannins that are soft but ever present, but so velvety. So pure and dazzlingly fresh. Really long finish that takes over the palate. The purity of this is incredible. What a mouthfeel as well. 100% Gamay in Amphorae. — 9 years ago

Couldn’t resist opening one of the newly arrived 2016 Pajès from Roagna. It opens with an earthy/clay nose and is a translucent brick red in the glass. Hints of rose, cherry, cocoa and red berries mixed with sharp, drying tannins. High potential and glad to have a benchmark while I lay a few more of these and some Vecchi Vitis down for a while. — 4 years ago

2018 Domaine de l'Ermitage "Victor" Costières de Nîmes Blanc
Price: $9.99
Costières de Nîmes is at the southernmost part of the Rhône Valley, on the opposite bank from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of our best new finds is Château de l'Ermitage, which produces three terrific values with immanent drinkability. The estate's history traces back to the 12th century when the winery produced wine for the pilgrims of St-Jacques de Compostelle who were traveling the Santiago de Compostela. The property is now owned by the Castillon family, and today Michel and his son Jerome manage the vineyards and winemaking. The "Victor" is named for the first member of the Castillon family to own the property. The blend is 60% Roussanne, 30% Grenache Blanc, and 10% Viognier. The soil consists of large pebbles from the Durance river which long predates the Rhône and vines average 20 years. Expect a richer palate from the Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, with lovely aromatics from the Viognier. The winery is certified Terra Vitis (sustainable).
