Riesling Zobinger Heiligenstein Lyra 2018

Tasted blind. Rigorous, text book Riesling. Closed bouquet that required some time to open up. Every little thing was hiding behind petroleum cloud - field flowers, chalk, soap and pineapple. There are almost no traces of fruits. Very long and interesting aftertaste with flavours of petroleum, apple seeds and flowers. Wonderful wine with huge potential (at least in my inexperienced opinion). It got the highest marks during tasting session. — 3 months ago

Kessler-Haak

Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2011

Hits all the Pinot Noir marks! Maybe 10 years aged helped too. Rich smooth well balanced flavor pallet with light elegant grape/fruit spice and tart notes, enough tannin end to be real and even reinforce the flavors, and a pleasant earthy aroma when you first lift the glass. I’ll look for more but I doubt that I can wait as long. — 3 months ago

Ca' Rozzeria

Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2017

Unlike prior iterations of this “secret” private label for Garagiste, the cork had no identifying marks denoting the estate from which it came. (I think the 16 sported a Casa Emma cork, if memory serves.) But regardless who made this, it’s really good. Dark ruby color. Great nose of violets, deeply intense dark cherry, some crushed gravel, and a slight balsamic note. Intense in the mouth, it’s lots of fruit and florals at first, but then gives way to loads of cooling crushed stone minerality, and ends quite savory. Good acids, and lots of soft tannin. Will improve for at least a couple more years, maybe more. — 3 months ago

Bodegas Pedro Martínez Alesanco

Blanco 2020

For the price👍🏼
Winery notes as follows

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Martínez Alesanco's Blanco is made from equal parts Viura, White Tempranillo, Malvasia, and Sauvignon Blanc in iron-rich clay soils. In fact, this red-tinged, iron-laden clay marks the wines as noticeably as it does the homes and structures of this structures of this off-the-beaten-path, soulful Rioja village. Given the coolness of the harvest combined with Badarán's unique colder climate, this is a zippy and bone dry white that makes for a perfect aperitivo or foil to fresh oysters, sushi, anchoas, jamon, you name it. Crisp, lively, ever so drinkable white.

Bodegas Olarra

Cerro Añon Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2010

Aha! No marks for guessing this wine’s origins - classic Rioja with a strong American oak influence throughout, just about kept in check by slightly dried cherry fruit and some worn leather, but then that vanilla again toward the finish. A decent enough example with plenty of life still ahead. — a month ago
